Back in May, I bought a cookbook called Deutschland vegetarisch and thought, “Since I live in Germany, it might be nice to try German cooking.” In a way like my favorite movie Julie and Julia, in which Julie cooks along Julia Child's cook book and write about her experience on her blog.

But I had the Gothic Festival, residency, and the start of my daughter’s summer holidays, I never quite got around to it.

Then today, out of nowhere on a rainy day, my daughter and I got excited and said, “Let’s make Milchreis for lunch!” If you’re not familiar, Milchreis, milk rice in German, is a sweet rice porridge cooked with milk — kind of like a dessert-y risotto. I had a sticky note on the page.

Well, that spontaneous idea turned into a disaster...

Just as I started cooking, my partner came in and said, “Hey, there’s an interview about @pupiko (the wooden chatbot for seniors we’ve been developing since last year). Can you reschedule your dentist appointment?” He kindly called the dentist, but they couldn’t move the appointment. So we started discussing who could go to the interview instead. Meanwhile, back in the kitchen — the pot of Milchreis was boiling over 😱

The sweet, milky mess didn’t stop at the stove — it flowed across the stove, down the oven, and even onto the floor. I was in shock. No photos — I was too stunned to even think of taking any. The milk had managed to seep between the glass panes of the oven door... I had the “brilliant” idea of using my long metal ruler to try and clean between the glass — and promptly cut my finger with the ruler.

Thankfully, it looks like the milk didn’t reach the oven’s electrical components. But I’m still a bit nervous to turn it on again. The cleanup was a nightmare in daytime.

As for the Milchreis itself? It was tasty, but between the generous sugar and butter, we were sugar shocked and took a long nap. This might have been my first and last time making Milchreis. Still, it was a sweet little summer memory for my family… or so I hope to believe 😅

My daughter told me there is a story titled "Der süße Brei" (Sweet Porridge) by Grimm Brothers, in which Milchreis spill all over a city. At least our mess was better than that.

Now that the cleanup is finally done and my nerves have settled, I’m writing this post. Thank you, as always, to the Rant, Complaint, Talk community and you who read my post!

調理をし始めたところで、相方が「@pupiko(去年から一緒に作っているおじいちゃんおばあちゃんのための木製のチャットロボット)のインタビューがあるから歯医者さんの予定ずらしてくれる?」

Experimenting with recipes for the first time has its risks, what an adventure... I hope that once your oven is dry, it will work again. I'm glad that despite the disaster, no one was hurt and that the dessert turned out so delicious that it was worth taking a nap. I encourage you to try again once enough time has passed and you've forgotten about the incident. You can't deprive yourselves of enjoying it because of something that could have happened with any other dish you usually cook. Set an alarm so you don't overcook it! By the way, I didn't know that story by the Brothers Grimm. I'll look for it to read.

Thank you for the kind comment. As you wrote it was good no one had injuries 😊 I may try it in winter with an alert set. It’s more heavy taste for winter.

Meeeeiii, milchreiis ❤️ I even can't remember when I ate that last time😔 I did it one time with mandl milch, but it was not so good 😔

I didn't know it before I moved to Europe. As a Japanese I couldn't imagine cooking rice with sugar 😁 Mandel sounds good for me but ja, pity ... plant milk isn't easy when it's heated up same for soy. Barista milk may work?? I may try next time!

Oh God! 😂 I tried to imagine you, or myself in this situation and am glad it wasn't me. I know what it means, I know the dish too, but it's not my favorite. My grandmother used to make it, but with cocoa and back then (those were different times) as kids, we used to like it because it was sweet and we didn't get many sweets (yeah, tough times those were). Then when growing up, I tried it once and was disappointed. Now that we have everything, from Swiss chocolate to ... whatever you can imagine, this dish is not as extra, as it used to be. Poor you though, cleaning the kitchen must have been a pain.

Luckily everything is clean again ... The chocolate version sounds nice. It's on my todo for winter 😉 Acutally when I was topping cherry compote on, I thought it could be Blackforest cake style Milchreis with chocolate.
