I was kind of lost for words as I sat down to answer the question for this week's Chronicles; what is the one simple joy that never fails to brighten my day?
The simple answer is that many, small, simple things in life bring me immense joy! I find it impossible to only think of one thing, so I will share some of my favourites.
I love the ocean; it touches all the senses - the sight and sound of the waves splashing on the rocks, or lapping the sea-sand, the smell of the seawater, feeling the spray on my face, and tasting the saltiness on my mouth. Long walks on the wet sea sand, and feeling the vibration coming from the ocean beneath my feet. Daring the waves to lap up gently, but an unexpectedly strong wave rudely splashes up, soaking me and taking my breath away, and searching the rock pools and seashore for shells and pebbles. A visit to the beach brings me great joy and, for sure is my happy place!
Feeling the soil between my hands when gardening, planting seedlings of herbs or flowers, and seeing them grow from tiny, fragile seedlings to strong, healthy plants. Picking fresh herbs right outside my kitchen door when cooking. Seeing the buds of the flowers appear, and the beauty when they're in full bloom!
Things like love and laughter with family and friends.
The surprise visits are the most precious; no 'appointment' made, as we all tend to do nowadays; just popping in on the spur of the moment. Chatting the day or night away, reflecting on how our lives have changed, and laughing till our tummies hurt when we remember the crazy things we got up to when we were younger!
My two most favourite people in the world right now are my two precious sons, who bring the greatest joy!
How the years have flown!
Playing in the kitchen Cooking and baking is something I have enjoyed from a young age, and something that still gives me great pleasure. I used to stand on a chair and 'help' my Ouma and Mom Lily bake cookies and pastries. I could not even read the 'Decipe', but Mom said, I insisted that it had to be placed in front of me on the table;)
My handsome, charming Poe, who's changed from an aloof cat to a lovesick little boy, follows me wherever I go. Sleeping on my lap or resting his head on top of my feet so I can't move, as if to tell me to stop being so busy!
He brings so much joy with all his antics. Lately, he's been galloping down the passage like a racehorse at full speed, and suddenly taken an interest in watching television!
It started with watching birds in a nature program; he almost attacked the television the first time he spotted them.
Sitting around a fire at night, hearing the crackling of the wood and the sparks that disappear into the night. The smell of the woodfire!
