The Perks of Coastal Living: Free Food Straight from the Sea

Happy Sunday Hivers!

I often mention here that our home is very close to the sea. The moment you step outside the house, the ocean greets you, it’s only a few meters away. Aside from enjoying a beautiful view every single day, one of the biggest perks of coastal living is being able to enjoy free food straight from the sea.

There are parts of our municipality where the sea does not recede, but we are thankful that in our area, it does. During low tide, we are able to gather many foods from the sea such as sea urchins, edible sea snails, fish, and more.

Lately, low tide often comes early in the evening. With only a flashlight in hand, my brother decided to go gathering by himself. He’s not easily frightened, so heading to the sea at night didn’t bother him at all. It didn’t take long after he reached the shore, and he was amazed to find how many sea snails he was able to collect.

The next day, my mom cooked what he gathered for breakfast. Living so close to the sea is really something, we don’t worry much about meals. Even without money, we can still eat well because the sea provides so much food.

It would have tasted even better with moringa leaves and lemongrass, but since our garden was ruined by the storm, my mom just added ginger, red bell pepper, onion, and a sprinkle of salt.

It was just a simple meal. Living so close to the coast, you can really survive even with very little money, because there’s always plenty of free food from the sea.

Namaste! I am fond of reading books, watching korean, american and filipino series/movies and I am also fond of gardening. I love listening to different life stories and I am always captivated with the beauty of nature so travel is my escape when life turns into blue. But hey, how could I forget my photography hobby? It is one of the best, so follow me as I will be featuring my experiences of the stuff that I am passionate with.

Wow it's good to know that this is for free in your place...here in my place this cost a lot...it's 50.00 per pack of this sea snails..

Yes, this is really free here since we gather them ourselves. Even Php 50.00 is already expensive for us because we have plenty of sea snails. We can eat well here with just salt as our only expense.

@kellyane Wow you're very fortunate that you can save a lot...here in the city is quite expensive and everything is being bought..
