All wheels rolled to the First Light Beach House for my sister-in-law's 60th birthday bash last weekend.
This 8-bedroom house sits high above volcanic rocks right on Sheffield Beach, and has seen our family celebrating a 30th, a 60th, and a second 60th this year. A 21st and a 70th coming up next year! Friends were joining the night of the party.
Pancakes were on the breakfast menu the morning of the party. I've been the family pancake maker for years. We were 18 in the house, I ended up making about 50 pancakes. We gave some to the staff working at the house. Nothing ever goes to waste!
My brother and my nephews outdid themselves—they took care of our three-night accommodation, flowers, table decor, balloons, and a special birthday cake. They also booked a cover band, Final Edition, who perform at the Salt Rock Hotel on Sundays.
We were once again spoilt by Private Chef Ballito, who arrived late in the afternoon to do the final food preparations.
As it is such an awesome venue, they asked if they could bring a photographer for social media marketing. This made taking photos of the food a tad difficult, and lighting wasn't always easy as everyone was spread out. Two cosy lounges, a large balcony overlooking the Indian Ocean, a bar counter, and a very long dining table made for many little groups.
My nephews also bought an inexpensive tiara for ZAR400 at a small local bridal store. Stunned when they later went to a party shop and found a plastic tiara for ZAR15! It was purely for fun; my sister-in-law did not want to wear it, but she put it on for a short while!
We had several main canapés and two desserts, starting with
Individual prawn and avocado cocktails
Fish & Prawn Croquettes with Tarragon Mayo
Butternut Stuffed Ravioli with baby tomato sauce & fresh Basil
Chicken Mayo in crispy Puff Pastry Shells
Shaved Roast Beef Crostini with Horseradish Mayo
Mini Taco Cups
Lamb Skewers
Mini Smoked Salmon & Leek Quiches
Food was coming fast and furious, so I did not get to take photos of everything, but there's one quiche on this platter of leftovers;)
Dessert consisted of Tiramisu Tartlets - looked like traditional milk tarts until we took a closer look and took a bite. I did not get to take a photo of that!
And my favourite dish of the evening
Profiteroles - mini choux puff pastries filled with whipped cream, topped with melted chocolate and fresh Strawberries
My darling sister-in-law has only ever had Dachshunds, always at least two, so they don't get lonely. She dotes on her pooches, so no guessing what birthday cake was chosen.
Good food, family, friends, and great music made for a fabulous birthday bash; one of the happiest occasions for a long while.
My brother and his wife sure know how to bring people together and make things happen, and my nephews are following in their footsteps!
