FroggyStyle

in #goodvibesonly5 days ago (edited)

We had yet another amphibian visitor on our deck after the last torrential rains and I re-homed him down by the pond. We were befuddled, at first, by how these little frogs were getting up on our ten foot high deck that has no stairs leading to it. Then some of the original residents in our neighborhood educated this city boy (me) about how frogs can easily climb vertical surfaces. We have a ravine that runs behind our house that turns into a stream when it rains and I’m sure the frogs are just seeking high ground so they aren’t swept away.

Renovation Update

Measure.jpg

Materials are chosen, final details are settled on, deposits are made, “i’s” are dotted “t’s” are crossed. Next, we’ll be scheduling the days our kitchen renovation, hardwood floor, and carpet installation will be taking place. We have to vacate the house for two weeks but be close enough to check on the crews’ progress every day. Life is about to get very interesting for the next month or so but, the good news is everything should be done in time for the holidays! Of course, I'll be sharing plenty of after photos as soon as they're available.

Feeding My Inner Brit

Thanks to 23andMe I've discovered my DNA is about as British as it could be. Most of our ancestors originated from the dead center of London. I've also discovered DNA is strong! During my visit to England in 2019, to my dismay, I even enjoyed black pudding.

We watch a few British YouTubers like RateMyTakeaway, Hannah Ricketts, and Gary Eats that leave my stomach rumbling when they review traditional English food like meat pies, fish and chips, afternoon teas, stews, and the famous full English breakfast.

Recently I've found a fix. An American-based company called Parker's will deliver traditional English food right to your doorstep and the prices aren't terrible either. I plan on working my way through their entire menu, I have my work cut out for me. : )

Portrait Mode

I’ve been experimenting a lot this summer with my iPhone’s (15 Pro) camera. Recently, I’ve been pushing the boundaries of the camera’s portrait mode.

The more I delve into the iPhone’s capabilities, the more impressed I’ve become. For most of us there would be, literally, no reason to own a standalone camera anymore. It’s been a lot of fun watching and capturing the natural world around our house as it has changed with the seasons this year. The warm weather is fading quickly now, I’ve even had to turn the furnace on.

Robotaxi

After experiencing the most current version of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving in my car during my brother’s recent visit I’m confident saying that the tech is now ready for widespread release and regulatory approval.

Yesterday I took it a step further and was excited to be amongst the first wave of people to download the new Robotaxi app. With the Robotaxi network set to expand rapidly across America, soon anyone will be able to call a driverless taxi from their phone and it will whisk them away to their destination while they work, rest, or just spend time on their devices. All for around 1/3rd the price of Uber or Lyft. The world of transportation is about to change drastically. Pretty soon it’ll be commonplace to see vehicles driving themselves anywhere across America (and eventually the world).

The app shows a glimpse of what the experience will be like. It will allow you to preset your preferences for things like - temperature, ride style, music/video preferences right in the app so your experience is tailored instantly to your liking across all future Robotaxi rides.

Good Vibes Only

I wanted to take a moment to thank all who’ve supported the #GoodVibesOnly initiative on Hive so far. A special thanks to my partner on this project @TengoLoTodo for his efforts and @agmoore for being one of the first to post using the tag! There haven’t been many Hivians joining in yet but, Rome wasn't built in a day, I’m confident the initiative will grow over time.

If you find yourself writing a post that you feel has a positive message please consider using the #GoodVibesOnly tag. There are a few of us who will be monitoring the tag and rewarding content that fits the criteria. Extraordinary posts using this #GoodVibesOnly tag will be shared amongst all my outside socials (and possibly be rewarded in other ways).

As we ease into another weekend I'll leave you with this:

All for now. Thanks for reading.

Oh my word Eric, Robotaxis sound like something futuristic, but that's where we're at!
We used to find the odd frog inside the house, lived about 500 meters from a river. They always gave me a fright...but I think they got a bigger fright than I did.
Exciting about your renovations, best to move out and save yourselves a load of frustrations!

Yes, it's very futuristic! They're using Model Y's now for Robotaxi rides but soon the Cybercab will be handling most of the rides:

We have one (or more) of these little frogs on our deck after almost every rain. I looked them up and they're a species of tree frog. They can freeze solid in the wintertime and come back to life when they thaw out. Pretty incredible. I jumped the first time I saw one! You just don't expect frogs to be on a deck that's ten feet up! Lol. I'm used to them now. I was reading a book on the deck yesterday and felt something staring and, low and behold, another "deck-frog".

We're getting to the point where we're excited now about the renovations. We've been in the planning stages since July and the contractors are finally starting to schedule the work-days now. Our plan is to get it all wrapped up before Thanksgiving in November. I think that's very doable. I hope you're well and settling into your new home!

Have you discovered Lost in the Pond on YouTube? It's a Brit in the Chicago area who talks about myriad differences between American and British life, including some of the awkward situations where, for example, American English retains characteristics which disappeared in the UK.

I have seen that channel and it's interesting the cultural differences he points out. It's a brilliant idea for a channel.

Full English breakfast pfaf!

You want a full Scottish! This was mine for three days last weekend! Haggis Lorne Sausage and Potato Scone are a must in a breakfast!

RateMyTakeaway is great but I haven't watched him for ages!

And yes it was great to see @agmoore and her cute wee ornery cat using #GoodVibesOnly

Oh man, you're making me hungry! That will definitely be on my list to try when I make it to Scotland. Sadly RateMyTakeaway just announced they're quitting the channel last night. It was a dispute between Danny, the cameraman, and the editor apparently. We're very sad because we watched regularly. The channel was in decline though since Danny had his stroke. They just kept reviewing the same kind of food.

Good afternoon, dear friend @ericvancewalton

Nature is wise. It endowed wild animals with intelligence to survive. It doesn't surprise me that they come all the way to your high terrace.

It's quite a task organizing a partial restoration of the house. I have no doubt that the kitchen will be beautiful and functional enough to be used for this year's holidays.

It's great that you're experimenting with your cell phone's camera features; the shots are truly beautiful.

Have a great day.

Nature is in perfect balance, isn't it? Thanks, Luis! I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

That is pretty cool about the robotaxi thing. I saw an article about it the other day, but I didn't really realize what it was all about. I figured it was just for short distances in the city. It would be cool if they expand that out further. Wow, that is crazy that you have to leave the house for that long. I hope it all turns out really nice!

It doesn't get much media coverage, sadly. They've expanded the Robotaxi service areas in Austin and will be expanding to parts of California next. I imagine the Twin Cities will be on their shortlist. It'll be just like Uber or Lyft I think so any length of ride will eventually be possible. It is crazy! I think a majority of the messy work will be done in a week so we could, technically, spend the night after that but we wouldn't have a kitchen to cook in. Thanks! I'm a little nervous but these contractors have good ratings so all should be good.

Do you know if they are members of the local home builders association? That is one of the things that my buddy always told me to look for. He usually does a lot of my work, but we have never embarked on something quite as large as you are. I actually have a post coming up sometime about a funny self driving story. I'm not sure when I will get to it though.

I'll have to follow up with them to see if they're part of the local HBA. That's a good idea! You can't really trust Google or any online reviews/ratings these days. I'll be looking forward to the self driving story!

That frog is so cute! And kudos on the renovation. Looks like you know what you are doing. We found a handyman company to do what needs to be done because we have no skills in that area (although my daughter is pretty good at handling small jobs).

I’m confident the initiative will grow over time.

Yes! People will catch on. It's sort of like another community, positive vibes spreading across Hive.

Thanks! They're all so tiny (about the size of a quarter)! I'm okay at smaller-to-medium sized DIY jobs around the house but we hired contractors for this work. I'm just measuring the kitchen island in the picture for a "waterfall feature" where they attach part of the countertop vertically down one side of the island. I really hope it catches on! If it's meant to be, it will be. : )

But what will all the people do? It sounds like an interesting concept, no doubt, this Robotaxi thing, but I do wonder about all the drivers who'll be out of a good job.

That's a very good question and will be a dilemma that we'll be scrambling to solve, I'm afraid. So many American households now rely on extra income from food delivery services or ride share apps just to pay their monthly bills. I'd guess almost every American has friends/family who drive for these apps. Robotaxi (and competitors) will decimate these jobs because their operation costs will be so much lower. The best time to begin planning for this massive job-elimination would have been five years ago. It's going to be an interesting societal transition!

I really enjoyed reading this post! It’s nice to see so many different updates in one place, from the climbing frogs to the home renovation and even trying out new food. The excitement for Tesla’s Robotaxi and the positive vibes on Hive make it even better. A great mix of nature, tech, and community spirit!

Many things are going on at the same time in life and it is a fact that we have to take some time out of the difficulties and worries of life for relaxation and to look at each and every thing. The coming time will also show us the flying taxi and we will see that whatever this thing comes out, whatever company comes out, will become very famous all over the world.

Two weeks out of the house while doing daily check-ins is a lot to juggle, but having it done before the holidays will be worth it. All that prep now should make crew days smoother. Where are you planning to stay nearby, and do you keep a small go bag for those quick visits? I like tossing painter’s tape and a notebook in the car to flag questions and track decisions fast.

It will be a lot to juggle! Especially with having to keep up on all of the other responsibilities. We'll either end up in an extended stay hotel or an Airbnb in the area. We'll need something with a small kitchen so we can cook meals. I use my phone for notes now so that will probably be all I'll need for the daily check-ins.

An Airbnb with a real kitchen sounds perfect. Your phone can be the command center, maybe one pinned note or a shared checklist so the daily calls are quick. Are you thinking of doing a simple meal plan for the two weeks, like two or three go to dinners you can rotate? Also, do you have a plan for packages and mail while you are out?

With the change of seasons, the environment around your home has changed and flowers have started to bloom and shine brightly in yellow. With the change in climate, a heater will be very important for you in the winter. With the arrival of the cold season, you will be able to have a good time.

The winter is very harsh here but we should be able to get outside at least for another month or month and a half. I'm praying for a mild winter.

It is nature. Interesting to see how wildlife adapts to urban settings ;)

They're quite creative in how they find ways to survive!
