To be honest, I wasn't really a fan of tofu before.
It was just too plain.
Every time I saw it, I already imagined something bland and tasteless.
So I never really felt excited about eating it.
But that perspective changes during my cousin's wedding.
Among all the dishes served that day, the tofu surprisingly tasted really good.
That was the moment I realized tofu just needs the right way of cooking and seasoning.
Also, I appreciate tofu again when our friend makes it a tofu sisig.
It's so flavorful, savory, and a little crispy.
Because of those experiences, I suddenly crave tofu.
So when we went to the market, I bought a few pieces.
And they were only 7 pesos/$0.12 each. So affordable!
So today, let me share with you how I cooked it, that it turned out really tasty and satisfying.
Ingredients:

• 3 blocks tofu
• 1 medium red onion
• 2 cloves garlic
• red and green chili
• 1 teaspoon crushed black pepper
• 3 tablespoons soy sauce
• 1 tablespoon vinegar
• 2 tablespoons water
• 1 teaspoon sugar
• cooking oil
• spring onions
Cooking Process:

• First, cut the tofu blocks into thick slabs, so they would cook nicely and become crispy.

• Next, heat enough cooking oil in a pan then add the tofu. Fried them until they turned light golden and slightly crispy on the outside.

• While the tofu was frying, use the time to prepare the aromatics. Chop the garlic, onions, and chilies. Then add soy sauce, sugar, vinegar, and a little water. Mix everything well so the flavors can blend. Then set it aside for at least 10 minutes to soak together and develop a satisfying taste.

• Once the tofu was done, remove it from the pan and set it aside on a plate.

• Cut it into bite-sized cubes.

• After that, it was ready to be mixed with the flavorful sauce mixture.

And just like that, it's done.
That's how simple it is to make a Tofu ala Chowking.
The tofu was crispy on the outside while soaking up the flavorful sauce.

You can pair it with a hot steaming plate of rice, and your lunch is solved. 🍽️
This homemade version definitely satisfied my tofu craving, and I'll be making it again soon.
If you're also a tofu lover, or even someone who used to think tofu was plain...
