Standing in the Cornfield

I absolutely love observing cornfields. At the beginning of true summer, you can hear and witness the dance of the corn ladies in the cornfield. It may sound like I'm using a metaphor to describe corn, but I actually mean it.

The original story of the Corn Lady comes from Native American folklore, and it fascinated me when I was a child. I first saw a real cornfield when I was around kindergarten age. Then, I experienced a real cornfield when I was around elementary school age. At that time, though, I don't think I felt a particularly strong connection to corn. My most vivid memory comes from one family trip to a cornfield.

My younger brother and I ran into the field together. Almost all of the corn was taller than we were. I remember feeling a little overwhelmed by its energy. The corn looked so beautiful and healthy. We were allowed to choose our favourite ears of corn to take home.

I think choosing vegetables is very similar to choosing your favourite flowers, stones, leaves, insects, sticks, or other treasures you find in nature. Somehow, something seems to call out to you, asking to be chosen. It's almost as if it shines just a little brighter to catch your attention. It feels like making special eye contact.

I chose an ear of corn that looked incredibly healthy. Its kernels looked like little pieces of yellow jewelry. It tasted amazing after being boiled for just a short time. Actually, if the corn is fresh enough, I don't mind eating it raw.

Since those childhood memories, I've become a true corn lover.

In my hometown, corn is one of the most important foods of summer. Whenever I see a handmade sign that says "Fresh Corn," I can't resist stopping to buy some. At roadside farm stands, local farm ladies are often busy boiling freshly picked corn. I love the atmosphere of those little summer corn stands.

People also sell grilled corn with soy sauce at parks during the summer. The smell of baked corn instantly makes you feel that summer has arrived. Eating fresh corn at the park somehow makes people appreciate the simple joy of summer vegetables.

When you stand in a cornfield, it almost feels as though the corn notices that you're there. As soon as you reach toward it, the corn ladies begin dancing for you. They sway with their whole bodies, celebrating the short but beautiful summer season.

The old folk story taught me that we shouldn't leave any corn behind because the ones left in the field would feel lonely and cry. Perhaps that's why I always feel a little emotional when I see a field full of corn.

The other day, I really enjoyed standing in a cornfield with my husband and our dog during our evening walk.

Thinking about genetically modified corn makes me feel a little sad. I've heard that pollen from GMO corn can affect nearby organic cornfields if they are close together. I think the wind carries the pollen from one field to another.

Whenever I choose corn, I gently peek inside the husk just a little to check the colour and quality. Then I decide which one I'd like to eat that day.

Sometimes I make corn silk tea using the silk. I also like wrapping seasoned ground meat in corn husks and steaming it. The sweet aroma of the corn soaks into the meat, and it's absolutely delicious.

I took these photos last week. We've had several rainy days since then, so I'm sure the corn is much taller now than it was in these pictures.

By the way, the corn in my own garden is still much shorter than these, but it's growing well so far. I can't wait to harvest and eat our own corn, too!
