'Elbows Up' and 'Unavailable Since 1867'
"Elbows up" originates from Canadian ice hockey. Legendary player Gordie Howe used the motion of raising his elbows to intimidate and defend against opponents while battling for the puck in the corners. UBC archives describe it as a symbolic move for applying pressure and countering opponents.
Today, the phrase has transcended sports to become a political and cultural slogan in Canada, symbolizing resistance to pressure from the United States. It gained further recognition when Mike Myers performed the gesture on Saturday Night Live. I originally liked Mike Myers’ act, and I became even more interested in his style of comedy.
I don’t know much about hockey culture, unlike the super fans. However, it’s nice to learn about the atmosphere, expressions, and culture connected to ice hockey.
When I visit local stores, farmers’ markets, and supermarkets, I often notice local products like this. I enjoy checking out souvenir-type items because they help me learn about the culture.
Some of them are a bit too fancy for me, but they’re fun to look at. The colours are so bright, and the logos are so catchy. They really grab your attention.
This honey brand is so delicious. The quality is delicate and very high. It’s almost like a medicine. When I have allergies or a sore throat, it heals very quickly.
Syrup and jellies. I’ve never tried these products, but they all look delicious. Apples are very popular in this area, so there are many products made with fresh apples.
My favourite apple products are apple cider juice and apple cider donuts. They make their own original apple cider donuts. When I tried their donuts for the very first time a few years ago, they were huge! Unfortunately, the donuts have become smaller. Even so, they’re still tasty.
These are maple syrup products. I’ve never tried this brand yet, although I’ve tried their original fudge made with maple syrup before.
This time, I almost bought the fudge, but the price had gone up a lot, so I decided to get only the donuts. I definitely want to buy the fudge next time!

「エルボーズアップ」はカナダのアイスホッケーに由来する表現で、伝説的選手ゴーディ・ハウがコーナーでパックを奪う際、肘を上げて相手をいかく・防御する動作から来ているそうです。ブリティッシュコロンビア大学のアーカイブでも、反撃やプレッシャーをかける象徴的なプレースタイルとして紹介されているとのこと。
今はスポーツだけではなくカナダ国内の政治・文化的スローガンとしても使われ、アメリカからの圧力に対する抵抗の象徴となっています。また、マイク・マイヤーズがサタデーナイトライブでジェスチャーを示したことで広く認知されました。私はもともとマイク・マイヤーズの演技が好きですが、彼のお笑いのスタイルにもさらに興味を持つようになりました。
熱狂的なファンのようにホッケー文化に詳しいわけではありませんが、アイスホッケーにつながる雰囲気や表現、文化について学ぶのは楽しいです。
地元のお店やファーマーズマーケット、スーパーに行くと、このような地元の商品をよく見かけます。文化を学べるので、お土産のようなものをチェックするのが好きです。

シロップやゼリー。これらの製品はまだ試したことがありませんが、どれもおいしそうです。この地域ではリンゴがとても人気なので、新鮮なリンゴを使った商品がたくさんあります。
私のお気に入りのリンゴ商品は、アップルサイダージュースとアップルサイダードーナツです。こちらのお店ではオリジナルのアップルサイダードーナツを作っています。数年前に初めてドーナツを試したときは、とても大きかったのですが、残念ながら、今では少し小さくなりました。それでも、やはり美味しいです。
こちらはメープルシロップの商品です。まだこのブランドは試したことがありませんが、以前にメープルシロップを使ったオリジナルのファッジは食べたことがあります。
ファッジを買おうか迷ったのですが、値段がかなり上がっていたので、今回はドーナツだけにしました。次回はぜひファッジを買いたいです！
