Happy Friday Hivers!
I’ve already shared here about the watermelons we planted. At that time, they were growing beautifully and looked very healthy. Both the vines and the fruits were thriving, which made us excited about the harvest.
However, as the days passed, we began to notice something unusual. The leaves slowly started to wilt, and at first, we thought it was simply because of the intense heat. But one day, when I checked near the base of the plant, I found a large hole. That was when we realized what had happened, the roots underneath had been eaten by crabs. Unfortunately, the damage to the root system was severe, which explained why the plant had gradually started to weaken and dry out.
Actually, I noticed a few weeks ago that the fruits no longer seemed to be growing. They had remained the same size since the last time I took photos of them. That was when I started to worry, thinking that the plant might eventually die before we could even harvest any watermelons.
Yesterday, since the vines were already close to dying, my mom and I decided to harvest the watermelons before they spoiled. In my mind, I wasn't expecting the fruits to have any edible flesh inside yet because they were still quite small.
When we got home, my mom immediately cut to open. To our surprise, it already had flesh inside, and when we tasted it, it was incredibly sweet. That moment made us happy despite everything that had happened.
Although the harvest was not successful because of the land crabs, my mom said we shouldn't stop growing watermelons. Instead, we'll plant them in the upper part of our land, where the land crabs haven't reached yet.
Honestly, I felt very disappointed at first. We had invested time and effort into growing them, and it was frustrating to see the plants damaged before they could reach their full potential. But then I realized that we are not the only ones who experience setbacks like this. Challenges and losses are a normal part of farming. Sometimes the harvest is poor, while other times it is abundant.
I may have felt sad and disappointed, but I am still grateful. Despite the damage, we were still able to harvest and enjoy the fruits of our hard work, and that alone is something to be thankful for.
