Sinigang Recipe: The Shrimp Soup That Warms Every Filipino Heart

The rain started early today, so we had to stay at home, take a short pause from our almost daily strolls, and give ourselves some warmer cups of coffee and tea.

Later, at noon time, I craved something warm, something tangy, and something savory for lunch. So I went outside and found myself in our local market and looking for something that could satisfy my cravings.

And I bumped into this stall of fresh shrimps, and I decided to cook our traditional Filipino soup that always warms every Filipino heart. The sinigang na hipon. A tangy and savory shrimp soup that is loved by every Filipino, from all walks of life.

Usually, Sinigang starts with boiling water in a casserole and slowly puts the ingredients into the boiling water. But for me, I prefer to start it with the sautéing of spices to make it more savory and mouthwatering.

So, let's go to my little kitchen.

Recipe: Sinigang na Hipon
Cooking time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:
350 grams of fresh shrimps
1 liter of tap water
A pack of Knorr Sinigang Mix (good for 1L of water)
2 medium tomatoes
1 piece of ginger
5 cloves of garlic
1 medium bulb onion
A bunch of spring onions
A small piece of cabbage
A bundle of lemon grass
String beans and water spinach (optional)

How to do it?:

  1. Prepare the ingredients, thoroughly clean the shrimp, and drain the water. Prepare the spices and leaves.

  2. Heat a pan or a casserole, add a tablespoon of cooking oil, and saute the garlic and onions, followed by the ginger and tomatoes.

  3. When the tomato juice starts to ooze, quickly add the drained shrimp and stir until it turns orange. You need to let the tomato juice ooze; this is the best way of having a savory, orange-textured soup.

4 When the shrimps are already done, add a liter of water, put a bundle of lemon grass, and cover the pan or the casserole.

5 Once the mixture starts to boil, open the cover, immediately add the Knorr Sinigang Mix, followed by the spring onions and cabbage strips.

6 Let it boil again for 2 minutes, and do not cover the casserole, or it will change the color of your leafy greens into lousy brown once you cover it.

And here we go, we are now ready to serve our warm, tangy, savory Sinigang na Hipon.

Thank you very much!😊

Looks really yummy. Thanks for sharing the recipe. I'm not that good in cooking but I am really trying. My goal this summer vacation is to switch into home cooked meals. For the past months , I solely rely on ordering foods online or buying at the nearest eatery because of how hectic my work schedule is.

Thats okay maam. But cooking your own food is healthier thank relying on fastfoods. They are silent killers 🤫

A picture I can smell. Definitely craving right now, despite of the scorching weather. WYKYK! 😉

Thanks maam. I am glad you smelled it through my photos. Thanks a lot po 🙏

Honestly I am now craving after reading your post :) I am going to keep this recipe incase I am needing it to cook Sinigang shrimp it can save much to cook rather than dining at seafood restaurants 😊

Hello maam @antonette, my mentor 😊. Yes maam, sinigang in seafood restaurants ranges from 300 to 500 pesos. Yet if you will be the one to cook it you will save a lot more. And you can choose the veggies you want to include in your sinigang. Thanks for dropping by po. 🙏

The best when it comes to sinigang, the shrimp. I won't eat any sinigang unless it is a shrimp 😍

Usually sinigang is cooked with boiling water but mine is I sauteed first the spices and the shrimp. More savory, more orange-textured soup, more delicious ☺️

SInigang na hion was my youngest daughter favorite and I cooked this each time she request this food.

Hipon

This breaks the monotonous taste of usual soups. A tangy twist that made this perfect to our tastebuds. That is why your daughter loves this.

Home cooked meal is the best. And one of my fave is sinigang. it maybe hipon or baboy. Photo looks so delicious. Craving for it. 😋

Hahahah luto ka bukas nito sissy

Expensive sis, hehehe. We eat outside and for 6 pieces it cost 600 php. Puro river and lakes dito.

Ay ang mahal. You have to cook nalang po. Hehehe

Yes experience. And I will ready my medz. May allergy din sa hipon 🤦‍♀️🤣

This one literally finds me drooling @jeanieviv84 😅😅. I'm about to head to the wet market, should I buy shrimps and grace my dining table with this too? Hahahaha! Your post makes me crave for it. Nice content teach. Would love to share a bowl with you!

Hello sissy 😊. Thanks for dropping by. Shrimps are more fresh in the morning, so go out now and have them for your sinigang 😂😂😂 adventure. Dont forget the red tomatoes sissy and the ozzing technique hahahaha. By the way you can add some pinch of salt and vetsin if you prefer. Asim kilig jud ni sis ai…. I would love to share a bowl of sinigang with you din po.

The sour shrimp soup looks very delicious, similar to the Thai dish tom yum goong. But here, they also add fresh chilies. You pre-stir fried the spices, that’s a great idea! I’ll try making it too. Thank you for sharing sis, have a great day. ❤️❤️

Yes, ma'am @piyamas, this is similar to tom yum gong, only differing in some spices used. I love tom yum gong too, very much.

A hearty viand to taste. It is indeed a mouth-watering meal. I used to love this food but when my inherited allergies cropped up, I stopped eating this and simply contented looking at it. I do love seafood, especially since I am Mindanao-born and this kind of food is abundant in our place. Sometimes I eat this in small bits but I have to take a dose of anti-histamine first before digging in. Thanks for sharing your exuberant meal. Looking forward to reading more menus from you @jeanieviv84.

Thank you very much Ma'am @diosarich. I'm sorry to hear about your allergies po. I will be posting more recipes Ma'am, and I hope you will enjoy them too as much as you enjoy reading this recipe. Thank you po. :)

This is indeed mouthwatering! I love the way you let the tomato juice ooze, it gives natural color to the soup plus the tomato nutrients are surely in the soup. Sinigang is a staple soup in the Philippines, it is more than a dish but a comforting dish. I've read an article that ranks our sour soup number 1 among all other soups.

Thank you! I agree—letting the tomato juice blend into the broth really brings out both flavor and nutrition. It’s amazing to know that Sinigang is getting global recognition; truly, it's a comforting taste of home.

I like how you bring that extra depth by sautéing the spices first, such a clever twist! It's a pure comfort in every spoonful. Thanks for sharing this beautiful Filipino comfort food moment. 🥰

Thank you Ma'am @gretelarmfeg. Sautéing the spices first brings out their aroma and makes the broth richer. Soup texture at its best.

My fivorite seafood is shrimp i do cooked to my family during weekends get together plenty veges sinigang is the best

Thank you Ma'am. Sinigang is known everywhere in the country. I'm glad you cook this too.

Thanks for posting in the ASEAN Hive Community.

As I am reading this, I can’t help but feel both nostalgic and hungry already. The description of Sinigang na Hipon brings back warm memories of sharing hearty meals with family during rainy days, and this meal I already remembered my father. Your approach to sauteing the spices first adds a unique twist that elevates the dish savory flavor. I admire how you highlight the nutritional benefit of the soup, that's good, making it not just a comforting meal but a healthy choice too, correct. This recipe is a beautiful reminder of how food connects us to our roots and brings joy to our hearts, especially during quiet, rainy afternoons.
