Yummy Indonesian Chili Beef Jerky You Should Try!

in Foodies Bee Hive5 days ago

Hello, friends especially foodies!

Recently I wanted to have dendeng batokok. A bit explanation of it, dendeng means beef jerky that made of thin sliced dried meat; while batokok means pound, it refers to the process of tenderiizing the meat. Dendeng batokok is a traditional West Sumatran (Padangnese) dish that i once ever had in Jambi (also a city in Sumatra island) which made me fell in love. That's why sometimes i missed it.

Always having ideas of what to eat and always craving for food, so that day after Sunday churching, we went to the dendeng batokok specialist restaurant and we were there in the afternoon. Here was how the restaurant look.

It is one of the most popular restaurant in the area as you could see many customers fulfilled all of their dining area, indoor and outdoor. Even when it was not dining time, it was crowded. For you to know it was 3pm and it was that full.

The concept of the restaurant is outdoor, so even indoor you will still have the same atmosphere, no air conditioners there. And all of the chair and table mostly made of steel. But they had some rattan chairs inside. It is one of the eat then go restaurant, i think it would be impolite to let many other customers waiting for our table and chair because there is no waiting list there and you should wait on the tables with customers to take their seats after they finished.

There is a banner showing the QR code of their menu near their gate.

Here how the menu looked and i simplified it to be a photo collage.

For Nasi Dendeng (Beef Jerky rice), they had

  • Original Beef Jerky Rice
  • Beef Jerky Rice combo with Cow's Lung
  • Fully Satisfied Beef Jerky Rice (completed with Cow's Lung and Meatballs)
  • Double Beef Jerky Rice

For Nasi Lidah (Cow's Tongue rice), they had

  • Original Batokok Cow's Tongue Rice
  • Batokok Cow's Tongue Rice combo with Cow's Lung
  • Fully Satisfied Batokok Cow's Tongue Rice (completed with Cow's Lung and Meatballs)

For both Batokok Beef Jerky Rice and Cow's Tongue rice, they had 4 kind of chili paste to choose:

  • Balado chili paste (red chili paste)
  • Lado Ijo (green chili paste)
  • Matah (oily chili with red shallot)
  • Tigo Lado (i never tried this kinda chili paste, they said it would be served with sliced chili too), but the one i had in Jambi was in balado - not this restaurant branch and it was just a small restaurant, but their dendeng batokok was so tasty.

For Nasi Ayam (Chicken Rice), they had

  • Roasted Chicken Rice
  • Pop Chicken RIce
  • Kalio Chicken Rice
  • Spices Chicken Rice
  • Balado Chicken Rice

Suprisingly they also had our local instant noodle, indomie which they specially stirred the beef jerky.

Also they had talua barendo (fried omelette) too.

They also had some kind of cane bread and toast. And for drinks, they had tea, sweetened jasmine tea, pulled tea, pulled milo, mineral water, happy soda, sarsaparilla drink, kind of fruit juice, kind of Sumatran coffee (unavailable that moment), and Durian (king of fruit) soup (unavailable too).

After got the table (finally), i straightly went to order and paid at the cashier table. They gave me a table number, and in around 10 or 15 minutes we got our food and drink at our table. I right away sipped my iced tea cause it was a hot day and i was so thirsty.

Here how the Dendeng Batokok Rice looked

I chose the balado one, while my boyfriend tried their green chili paste.... Let's discuss about the taste and flavour of them.

Both of us ordered the ORIGINAL BEEF JERKY PACKAGE which contained rice with

  • beef jerky with chili paste on top,

The texture of the beef jerky was soft and easy to bite with spices that absorbed well in the beef sliced. The beef jerky had savory flavour and so yummy. For the chili paste, mine was balado, had tasty spicy, savory and a bit sweet favour..

while my boyfriend's was green chili paste. It had spicy, savory and a bit bitter flavour which made it less tasty than mine. The chili paste made the beef jerky tastier so you should have beef jerky with chili paste.

  • garlic stirred green beans,

still had crunchy texture of beans, they stirred it well with the garlic. It had light sweet flavour and also tasty.

and
crispy Jangek chip (crispy chip made of cow's skin).

Tasty in savory, the chip had crispy yet soft texture. And you should try it!

Overall, i like their dendeng batokok (chili beef jerky) and i would come back later of course!

Thank you

Indonesian Jerky has a good taste, but the spicy sensation is what makes it so delicious!
