Today, I revisited the Food Place food court, located at Pavilion Mall. The food court is located beside the Oriental Kopi Restaurant. It is time to try another stall.

This time, I ordered Nasi Lemak Abalone Gepuk from the Together Nasi Lemak stall for RM29.90 per plate. This dish combines Malaysia's national dish with a luxurious seafood ingredient.

The Nasi Lemak Abalone Gepuk is a premium reinterpretation of Malaysia's national dish. Instead of the traditional accompaniments, it features crispy, real abalones served alongside Royal Umbrella fragrant rice cooked with coconut milk and pandan. The meal is completed with sambal, creamy cashew (gajus) sauce, fried cabbage, tofu, peanuts, cucumber, toasted coconut floss, and fragrant fried curry leaves.

Using Royal Umbrella fragrant rice and real seafood abalone elevates the dish above a typical food-court nasi lemak. Rather than focusing solely on tradition, the restaurant emphasizes premium ingredients while retaining the familiar flavors of nasi lemak. The result is a dish that combines the comforting richness of coconut rice with the delicate sweetness and chewy texture of abalone, creating a luxurious yet recognizably Malaysian meal.
History
Nasi lemak originated among the Malay communities of the Malay Peninsula. The name means "rich rice," referring to rice cooked with coconut milk. Originally eaten as a simple breakfast with sambal, anchovies, peanuts, cucumber, and egg, it has evolved into Malaysia's national dish with countless modern variations

Abalone is a prized marine mollusk that has been eaten in East Asia for thousands of years, especially in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean cuisines. In Chinese culture, abalone symbolizes wealth, prosperity, and abundance, making it a popular ingredient during Lunar New Year, weddings, and banquets.

The word "gepuk" comes from Indonesia. Traditionally, it refers to meat that is marinated, cooked until tender, lightly pounded, and then fried. In recent years, the term has expanded to describe dishes featuring crispy fried proteins coated in bold Indonesian-style seasonings.

With the Combination of Malaysia nasi lemak, Indonesian-inspired gepuk seasoning and Abalone traditionally associated with Chinese cuisine, what we get is a modern fusion concept nasi lemak

This is an upscale interpretation of nasi lemak. At RM29.90, the use of real abalone justifies the premium price compared with ordinary nasi lemak. It's designed as a speciality dish that blends Malaysian comfort food with a luxury seafood ingredient, making it more suitable for diners looking for something unique rather than a traditional everyday nasi lemak.
