Why eating a healthy (zero added sugar) breakfast is a great start to your day

Anti Sugar

I've been on an Anti sugar crusade of sorts now for over one year. I'm pretty sure it annoys my wife, especially if I mention any sugar she consumes. So, it very rarely comes up in conversation, or it can perceived as unkind, even though it one hundred percent comes from love.

I've seen firsthand the benefits of cutting lots of added sugars.

I'm not as hardcore as I used to be, and now have occasional deserts for occasions like birthdays, weddings or the like.

When I initially started, I was also constantly scanning ingredients and labels and I know this drove my wife nuts. I'm not as zealous on that anymore, but do you care about the fuel you put into your car or will any old dirty unfiltered fuel do? Well, your body is the best and most important vehicle any of us will ever have, so we should care about the fuel we use to power it.

With this in mind, I've been having a fruit and nut zero added sugar breakfast every morning for the past one year plus.

Ingredients

First up are a mixture of nuts, usually almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts.

Why nuts @ablaze?

  1. Good source of healthy fats

    • Nuts contain mostly unsaturated fats, which can help support heart health when they replace less healthy saturated fats in the diet.
  2. Packed with protein

    • Protein helps build and repair muscles and can help you feel full for longer between meals.
  3. Rich in vitamins and minerals

    • Nuts provide important nutrients such as vitamin E, magnesium, zinc, selenium (especially in Brazil nuts), and B vitamins.
  4. High in fibre

    • Fibre supports digestive health, helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels, and can help keep you feeling satisfied after eating.
  5. May help protect the heart

    • Regular nut consumption has been linked to a lower risk of heart disease due to their combination of healthy fats, fibre, antioxidants, and minerals.

So nuts are a no brainer!!

I also like to add fruits and that usually includes a banana, an apple, strawberries, raspberries and grapes.

    • Vitamin C and other nutrients help the body fight infections and stay healthy.
  6. Provide natural energy

    • Fruits contain natural sugars along with fibre, making them a great source of energy. Banana is especially popular as an energy-boosting snack.
  7. Help maintain a healthy weight

    • Fruits are generally low in calories and high in water and fibre, helping people feel satisfied.
  8. Support healthy digestion

    • The fibre in fruits promotes regular bowel movements and supports beneficial gut bacteria.
  9. Help with hydration

    • Many fruits contain a lot of water, which contributes to daily fluid intake.
  10. Taste great and encourage healthy eating

Up until a few years ago, I was having 3 teaspoons of sugar in my coffee. I cut back on sugar for health reasons. I only have one teaspoon now or none at all. I used to eat a lot of fruit but only have berries now. It's been a journey as I had such a sweet tooth, but worth it.

Ya I remember Thinking , how could anybody not have sugar in their tea. I gave it up one year for lent and afterwards sugar in tea was disgusting!

Same story for coffee. Even a hint of sugar in tea or coffee ruins the taste for me now and all I can taste is the sugar.

The thing with sugar is it's extremely addictive too, so one wants more and more.

Don't forget oats!

I use similar ingredients to you in my overnight oats recipe. Especially the nuts from Lidl.

Recently I've been looking for ways to avoid not just added sugar, but most ultra processed food. I found Google AI surprisingly helpful at giving me low processed suggestions within my budget. But nothing beats reading the label.

P.S. Actually, avoiding the labels by making your own meals from scratch beats reading them. But I'm struggling to change the habits of a lifetime. So any tips on meals beyond breakfast are welcome.

Ya man, I must give the overnight outs a go. I often use flaxseed and chia seeds, but oats defo a good idea to fill out the bowl.

You're 100% right about making things from scratch and lots of our dinners are from scratch, with the only tin or packet going in tinned tomatoes and a stock cube. The rest is meat, tonnes of vegetables and herbs and spices...

Nothing wrong with tins if its just food and water. Maybe a little bit of salt. But not sodium metabisulphite. I eat a lot of frozen veg for convenience and avoiding waste.

So good. Winter here so I'm doing porridge with a 5 seed mix, oranges, coconut yoghurt ... I use vanilla sugar free collagen powder as the sweetness. So good

Totally! I mean even when I'm knackered after work and want to order in I can usually whip up some fish, salad and boiled potatoes in 15 minutes. Healthy food CAN be tasty and fast too! I think maybe people dont' have the imagination and cooking skills.

Same. No matter how low on food we are, there will be something I can muster. I guess if you're creative, it's easy. It's such an important life skill to be able to muster a meal from little and just be able to cook in general.

It is right? And something to teach the kids. I work with adults who can only cook if it's meat and a packet mix from the supermarket. Can it be that hard to teach yourself or am i being elitist only because I know how to cook?

I don't think you're being elitist. Like recipes, cook books, cooking show tell you exactly what you need and the exact method for preparing. I'd even argue it would be good for people's mental health throwing in some music and preparing a meal.. but I guess we came from homes where healthy home cooked meals were the norm, so to be fair it's probably a function of your upbringing too.
