Last Sunday, I decided to brave the gloomy weather and go cycling around the Yishun area. The sky already looked uncertain when I started, but I still continued because staying indoors for the entire weekend felt like such a waste. Of course, the weather eventually proved me wrong, and I was caught in the rain during my ride!

After cycling through the drizzle, all I could think about was finding something warm and satisfying to eat. Yishun is always a good place for this because there are plenty of hawker centres offering delicious food at affordable prices. No matter which neighbourhood I visit, I can usually find a comforting local dish without spending too much.

This time, I stopped at Broadway Food Centre at 848 Yishun Street 81. The surrounding area had that familiar neighbourhood atmosphere, with people buying fresh produce nearby and others dropping by the food centre for their weekend meal. Even though the weather was still gloomy, the place felt lively and welcoming.

Among the different stalls, one selling lor mee and prawn noodles caught my attention. There were already a few people queueing when I arrived, and for me, that is usually a good sign. When people are willing to wait for their food, there must be something worth trying!
I ordered the prawn noodles with yellow noodles and chose the dry version. I also added a little chilli paste because I wanted an extra kick after cycling in the rain. Once everything was mixed together, the yellow noodles became nicely coated with the dark, savoury sauce and chilli. The noodles had a pleasant springy texture, while the sauce was flavourful without becoming too heavy.

The bowl came with prawns, fish cake slices, pork slices, bean sprouts, spring onions and crispy fried shallots. The amount of prawns was not very generous, but they were prepared well. Most importantly, they tasted fresh and had a firm, satisfying bite. Sometimes, quality matters more than quantity, especially when the ingredients are handled properly.

I also enjoyed the fish cake slices because they were soft, slightly springy and absorbed some of the sauce from the noodles. The pork slices were tender enough and made the dish feel more filling. Meanwhile, the bean sprouts added a little crunch, giving the bowl a nice mixture of textures.
A small bowl of warm soup was served on the side. It was comforting to sip between bites, especially after being caught in the rain. The warm, savoury soup and the spicy dry noodles made a satisfying combination that helped me forget about my wet cycling journey for a while.
The ambience of the hawker centre was another part of the experience that I enjoyed. Since it was still drizzling, the air was breezy and the food centre did not feel too warm. Sitting there with my noodles while listening to the gentle rain made the meal feel even more comforting.

And of course, an iced coffee was a must! I know it sounds funny to order an iced drink during rainy weather, but coffee is coffee LOL. It refreshed me, perked me up and gave me enough energy to continue the rest of my day.
Overall, this simple bowl of prawn noodles satisfied my craving and made the rainy cycling trip worthwhile. It was affordable, comforting and full of familiar local flavours... the kind of meal that reminds me why I enjoy exploring neighbourhood hawker centres.
Bon appétit!
