I will support your skeptical tone and say: the architecture looks pretty but there is not much (authentic) life on these streets.
There are such towns and cities that resemble a dead snail. The snail died long ago, but the shell remained, and souvenir shops and hotels were opened in it. That shell doesn't walk, doesn't eat, doesn't breath, but it looks pretty so entrepreneurs make money from this.
Modern tourism is significantly based on this: temples crowded not with praying people but Instagrammers, etc.
