Hello all, hope all of you are doing fine as we start off a new week. There are some interesting eating places near my area and I would like to introduce them to the community. Today's eatery to share is a little interesting because it is named A Taste of Thailand, but other than the Tom Yum Soup that they served, everything tasted more like Chinese food rather than Thai food. However, this does not mean that the food they served is not good. So let's go deeper into it.
The Place
A Taste of Thailand
Address: 701A Yishun Ave 5, #01-01, Singapore 761701
This is a mini eatery that offers both indoor seating or outdoor seating.
Here's how the place looks like from the inside:

Apologies, I only manage to take a picture of the internal. And as you can see, it is rather crowded and almost fully packed. And honestly, I am rather thankful to be able to get a seat inside.
As it can get rather crowded during peak meal times, if they cannot offer you indoor seats, they will ask if you are ok to be seated outside. Generally, both indoor and outdoor works. Though on a hot and humid day, indoor would be a better choice. There is a huge carpark beside the eatery so parking will never be a problem. Another important information that I need to share is that, this place only accepts cash payment, if you do not have cash, it might be a hassle for you as you will need to cross the road to the nearest teller machine to withdraw some cash.
So let's go right into the food.
Now let's get right on the food.
The Food
As usual, we are famished and order a mixture of food which included staples and soup:
- Salted Fish Fried Rice
- Stir Fried Sambal Potato Leave
- Honey Glazed Chicken
- Tom Yum Soup
And here is the photo of the spread of food that we've ordered.

The amazing thing about this place is that while we ordered quite a bit, everything was served within 10 minutes which was crazily fast. It seemed like they can predict what I will be ordering.
So now let's dive into each of the items that we ordered. But before we go into food, I would like to talk a little about that small saucer of 2 sauce.

The seafood sauce on the left is the thing that give the Thai taste to the food we ordered upon dipping in it. Not overpowering and elevates the food upon dipping into it. The sambal chilli is good as well, adds quite a bit of kick to your rice or noodles and also taste great if used a dipping sauce for other food that is ordered. If anyone comes to this place, do make sure you get this saucer and request for more if you finished what you had.
Salted Fish Fried Rice

Many have said, fried rice is easy to make, but good fried rice is hard to make. And if you are a fan of TikTok/Youtube sensation Uncle Roger, you would know that cooking a good plate of fried rice is by far no easy task.
So is this plate of fried rice considered good? I am sure it is. You can see from the photo, the rice is not clumpy and well fried. There is definitely sufficiently tossing and control of the heat used to fry the rice. There is also definitely "wok hey" which is the smokiness infused into the rice and when mixed with the savoury taste of salted fish, it blends so well and every bite of the rice is so fragrant.
The eatery also served pineapple fried rice which my friends have tried before and mention that it is good. So to me, either work because I am certain that both are very nice!
Stir Fried Potato Leaves

Another seemingly simple dish that will go wrong if not properly cooked, will become mushy and overcooked. The control by the chef is really good and they also have a good sambal sauce that is sufficiently spiced up but not overpowering. Nice and simple.
Honey Glazed Chicken

This is an interesting dish which looked like sweet and sour pork but without the sour component. The sauce used to cook this dish is nice and one wouldn't stop eating upon eating the first one. Every piece of chicken is so tender and of a nice bite.
Tom Yum Soup

Finally, the only dish that truly is Thai food. Everything else above are all very much Chinese styled cooking and similar tasting food can be found in Chinese Stir Fry stalls, though the above dishes are really good in their own way.
As for the Tom Yum soup, the flavours are great, mid spicy with a good balance of sour to make us want to eat more. Ingredients used for the soup is nice and fresh which included prawns and squid and others. A hearty soup that goes really well with the fried rice. Cannot fault it as it is rather well done and of genuine Thai styled cooking.
Overall:
Like I mentioned earlier, everything came within 10 minutes which I always suspect that they have some telepathy with the kitchen upon us ordering the food.
A nice and small eatery that has a huge crowd during meal times. And I have to say, the price for this food is almost matchless elsewhere across the island. Really good value food that is really easy to the pocket. And because it is cash payment, they are ok to round down the cents which further save a little more.
If you are coming here expecting to eat Thai food, you will be utterly disappointed. But if you are just here for a meal, you will like the place which serves good food at a super affordable price.
Food quality wise, though served quickly, there was no compromise to food heat etc, nice and satisfying.
Closing
Thank you for coming by and reading my post. I am glad to be blessed with such a nice eatery in my neighbourhood which serves amazing food at really affordable prices.
