Ice on the tree and the sunlight made the usually pale orange hue of this Ponderosa pine bark look deep orange. Almost red in areas.

That is charring from a prescribed burn that took place a few years ago. They do it to try to help control wildfires. Supposedly safe for the trees.

It's interesting they can survive the fire. Maybe they have an evolved defense mechanism because of natural fires throughout history.
