Vanillekipferl - Vienna´s Popular Cookies

Hello Hivers!

Today I am sharing a cookie that is normally baked in the days of the advent before Christmas...in short, this is a Christmas cookie. We have been craving sweets for the past few days because I had not baked for a long time. I was in the baking mood so I thought of baking something. This is the easiest to make among the cookies that I bake.

Others say that it is difficult to bake because the dough breaks when hardened after baking. A tip in making this is... it has to be refrigerated first before shaping because the dough becomes firm when it's cold because of the butter ingredient.

Vanillekipferl is a delicious cookie which is made normally during the Advent time. Once tasted, one can not stop eating this. The tourists visiting the coffee shops in Vienna could ask for these to be served with the coffee of their choice. The locals bake them, wrap them in beautiful boxes and give these as a gift to their friends.

Vanillekipferl originates from Vienna, Austria and is traditionally made at Christmas. They are very well known in Europe and are often for sale in Viennese coffee shops. They are said to have been created in the shape of the Turkish crescent moon symbolizing the celebration of the victory over the Turkish in 1683. Source

This is also very popular in Germany, and in other parts of Europe particularly Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, Croatia, Czech Republic, Romania, and Slovakia. And so below is the classic recipe with only a few ingredients..

Vanillekipferl [Crescent moon cookies]

Ingredients
makes about 70-80 pieces depending on the size made
500 g all purpose flour
160 g sugar
2 packs vanilla sugar [sugar with vanilla aroma, if you do not have the real vanilla bean pod]
400 g butter
200 g ground almonds

Coating:
1 pack vanilla sugar
5 tablespoon confectioners sugar

Preparation

Preheat the oven at 175°C:

1… In a bowl, mix the flour, sugar, vanilla sugar and the ground almonds. Cut the butter in small pieces straight into the flour mixture and with both hands, combine it to make a smooth dough. Wrap in a plastic foil and refrigerate for about an hour.

2… Line an oven tray with baking parchment. Remove the dough from the fridge and scoop a small portion with your fingers and with two palms, shape into crescent or croissants placing each shaped dough directly on the tray.

3… Bake in a preheated oven at 175°C for about 13-15 minutes until the top becomes very slightly brown in color. Let the cookies cool a bit, but still warm, coat each in a mixture of confectioners sugar + vanilla sugar.

Can be served on a platter or in a cookie jar with lid or cover. This will last for many days or for more than a week.

This is an easy peasy recipe and you may even let the kids join you and have fun with them shaping the dough into cookies.

The shape looks like cashew halves. I love cookies but sadly baking is not one of the things I love to do...so jelous of you...so many talents. You are my Jill of all trades.

Hahaha.. I did not bake before but I self learned it because I love to eat, lol!
