We finally successfully dined here!
There were two previous times of failed attempt because everything in the menu was out of stock, therefore the shop was closed.
Let's Raja's Appam!
A humble small shop selling authentic appam and Indian food.
Location: 36, Lorong Perak, Taman Melawati, 53100 Kuala Lumpur, Selangor
It has simple, clean minimalist interior too..opening hours 8am-9am (or till sold out). And the boss said usually in the morning it would be very crowded especially towards 10am. We were early that day because we wanted to 'catch it successfully'. We arrived at 8:30am haha.
Menu
A simple menu too, which is to our liking, not too exhaustive until you do not know what to choose. They are selling the best of their skillset.
Basically, appam is like a pancake, crispy on the edge and fluffy soft in the middle. But appam is slightly different in a sense it is bowl-shaped, originated from India and Sri Lanka. Instead of using usual wheat flour, this is made from a fermented batter of rice and coconut milk. Here, we have normal sweet appam, brown sugar appam, egg appam, banana appam and Sri Lankan appam.
Food we ordered
We wanted to try their appam first since it is their signature, so we ordered brown sugar appam, egg appam, banana appam and Sri Lankan appam. Sri Lankan appam is the most special one, recommended by the boss, it is the usual normal sweet appam, topped with brown sugar as well as a spoonful of creamy coconut milk. Hmmm....
Every appam will come with a side of light coconut milk, for you to drizzle on the appam, if you prefer. We really love it. It was a unusual breakfast for us.

We noticed it was a bit bland for the egg appam because it was supposed to be paired with savoury food. Hence, next we added chicken peratal, which is a dry type of curry from India, very flavourful with spices and aromatics. And it wow-ed us away.

We also ordered the masala tea. One sip and you could tell the huge difference from the usual Mamak tea. It is soothing to the palate, fragrant yet not too overly. Love it! And to drink tea from this stainless steel cup gave us some sort of authentic feeling. IYKYK.

We had a great breakfast time and a short chat with the owner. Our eldest son was at home studying at home for exam, and so we packed half of each appam for him, lol. Just for him to taste it. We will surely come back again another time to try the thosai, chapatti, idli and poori. And other peratals.
