I’ve never once had Korean food, but I feel like I already know what they are like. And i've not been to Korea or sat at a Korean restaurant or even seen Korean food in real life. But because I watch a lot of K-dramas, a lot of them.
What caught my eyes in k-dramas were their food. I didn’t understand what they were eating at first honestly. They ate noodles like it was the best thing in the world.
There’s ramyeon (Korean instant noodles). Anytime a character comes home late or even any time of the day, they make ramyeon. It’s such a simple meal, just hot water, noodles and maybe an egg or green onions in it. And they always eat it straight from the pot, I kind of love that.
Then there’s kimchi. I thought it was just spicy salad when I first saw it. But it’s a must have meal in Korean meals. I’m really curious to try it, I love spicy meals.
Another is tteokbokki, even its name amazes me sometimes. Its sauced rice cakes. When I first saw it, I had to pause the drama and search all about it literally. They usually have it on the street or with friends, and it looked fun.
There’s also kimbap, I thought it was sushi but it’s not. In a lot of highschool dramas, its usually packed as lunches, rice rolled in seaweed with different kind of fillings.
Then there’s hotteok, I really need to try this. Warm pancakes with brown sugar and nuts. They’re usually sold at street carts and it’s usually hot, with steam rising as you take a big bite. Even though I’ve never smelled and tasted any of this food, I almost feel like I have with the way they show up in the dramas.
Even if I watch a K-drama for its action or romance, I end up paying more attention to the food and I always pause to see what they’re eating. I’ve googled recipes I can’t even pronounce, just to know more. I haven’t had the chance to try a Korean food yet but for now I’m okay with just sightseeing.
There is this thing called banana milk that I always see in highschool K-dramas. Whenever they were on lunch break, they usually grab a banana milk to refresh themselves. That didn’t get me curious, but I started loving it when I found out it was Jungkook’s favorite (a member of BTS).
Then there is this adult drink you’d probably see in a lot of K-dramas, its called soju. You would usually see it. Sometimes when someone is going through heartbreak lol, they usually settle for soju. And the scenes get really funny.
I didn’t plan to fall in love with Korean food hehe, it just kind of happened. After watching one drama at a time. I think Korean food must be more than just being tasty and I really want to try it. I’m really curious. Maybe one day I’d get to taste them, so…I’m definitely looking forward to that day.
