HOW TO PREPARE NIGERIAN PUFF PUFF

Puff puff is a popular snack in Nigeria and in many countries across the world even though the name may vary from country to country. It is a popular street food that I grew up eating and it is also been prepared in most homes as snacks for the family mostly during the weekend when there is abundance of time and when the house is filled up.

Puff puff is prepared using deep frying method. The flour is mixed with yeast and other ingredients, then shaped into balls and deep fried in plenty of oil until it is golden brown in color. I doubt if anyone can resist a well prepared puff puff when all the boxes are ticked. I could remember how I used to patronize puff puff and doughnut street food seller every day when I was in Primary and Secondary school. Then I would top it up with a bottle of Zobo or sachet water.

There are some inevitable steps that must be duly followed in order to get your puff puff right. First, you must ensure that you mix the batter well so as to make sure that you achieve the perfect consistency. Also, you should try to give the batter enough time to rise, let's say about an hour. After an hour the mixture should have doubled the original size. Don't be in a hurry when you are preparing your puff puff. More importantly, use enough oil to fry the puff puff in a deep frying pan or pot. It may consume a lot of oil but you should not mind as far as it is going to give you want you want.

INGREDIENTS
  • 4 cups of flour
  • 4 spoons of yeast
  • 1 sachet of nutmeg
  • ½ Teaspoon Salt
  • Sugar
  • Water
  • Oil

STEPS TO FOLLOW
  • In a dry bowl, mix the flour, sugar, salt and nutmeg together

  • I used an instant yeast, so I didn't have to proof it. I just mixed the yeast with the other ingredients

  • Then add some lukewarm water and mix together until the mixture is smooth and without lumps

  • Cover the mixture and let it stay for about an hour to rise

  • Place your frying pan on medium heat and begin to fry until its golden brown.

  • Watch the heat to prevent your puff puff from burning.
