RE: Big House, Tiny Garden, March 2026

Oh that lettuce looks so good!!! Indoors? I'll have to look into that. It seems manageable. I'm kind of lazy, but that looks like something I could do.

Why Nashville? I rode through there once on my way to Memphis. We took 40 across the state. What I remember is that after Knoxville there is a stretch of road that runs along a sheer cliff. I have what's called cremnophobia--I am terrified of cliffs and that road was a nightmare for me. I don't remember Nashville that much...just the cliffs.

This should be an interesting cultural contrast. The way you describe your area (in NY), it's not that blue. Parts of New York are quite red. Where I grew up, farm country in the Hudson Valley, I believe it is quite red.

Good luck. Keep up informed about your adventure.

Sort:

Parts of NY are red, yes, but the laws and regulations of the state are, for the most part, very blue. And Nashville is blue, while the rest of the state is red, kind of the opposite of where I am now.

Lettuce is very easy. The seedlings seem fragile, but they survive almost any mishandling short of too little water. It takes a long time, at least 4 to 6 weeks, before you can eat much of it, then there is plenty for a good month or more. I hate buying lettuce at the grocery stores, it's all either awful, or packaged in a lot of plastic.
