Today, I revisited the Food Place food court, located at Pavilion Mall. The food court is located beside the Oriental Kopi Restaurant.
This time I ordered stir-fried minced pork and holy basil on rice from the Siam Taste stall, which cost RM16.90 per plate.
The dish features minced pork stir-fried with garlic, chilies, and the unmistakable aroma of Thai holy basil (known locally as krapow). Instead of the usual wilted basil, Siam Taste takes it up a notch by deep-frying the holy basil leaves until crisp, giving them a seaweed-like appearance and an addictive crunch.
The pork is savoury, slightly spicy (you can choose your heat level), and pairs perfectly with steamed white rice. On the side, a light salad of shredded cabbage and cucumber adds a refreshing crunch to balance the bold flavours.
Pad Kra Pao (ผัดกะเพรา) is one of Thailand’s most iconic street food dishes. It became popular in the mid-20th century as a quick, affordable, and deeply flavorful meal. Traditionally, it’s made with meat stir-fried over high heat with holy basil, garlic, and chilies, often topped with a fried egg. The use of holy basil is key—it adds a spicy, clove-like aroma that distinguishes it from sweet basil or other herbs.
At RM16.90, this dish delivers authentic Thai taste with a modern twist in presentation, making it a worthy pick for a quick lunch or satisfying dinner in the heart of Bukit Bintang.
