I had to run some errands on my lunch break today, so I swung by Wendy's to pick up a burger before going back to work. I ordered a $5 Biggie Bag with a chicken BLT, and when it came time to pay, the cashier said my card was declined.
What???
Yup, declined.
I had JUST been to the bank. I knew how much money was in that account. I ain't rich, but there was certainly enough to cover a burger...and rent, and a few other things.
I told her to swipe it again, tap it, swipe it sideways...it was a no go. She had already given me my food. It sat there in my passenger seat, in a paper bag, with a lonely look on its face...waiting to be adopted and taken to a loving home.
I didn't have another card. Mine are all maxed out at the moment. Even RC Willey has been calling me to make payments on that couch I bought last year. That's what happens when you're a poor single mom with three kids and rent goes up in your area and you lose your job and go three months unemployed only to get another job that pays half what you had in the first job.
In any event...I gave her this forlorn look, super apologized, and she gave me my card back and said sorry too. So I reached for the bag of food and lifted it toward her window to return it, and she said,
"I can't take that back. It's already been in your car. I would have to throw it away...."
"Oh...gotcha, gotcha. Well, I could just 'throw it away' for you," I suggested.
"I think that would be helpful." she said, handing me my useless debit card.
And so I threw it away, right down the gullet!!
