Hello gente de Hive! Hoy nuevamente tenemos un día lluvioso en la isla, así que por aquí feliz, ya que de verdad el calor estaba bastante fuerte y esta lluviecita le cae súper bien a las plantas que tenemos en casa, así que feliz y agradecida por estos días sin tanto sol y calor.
Para hoy les quiero compartir un trabajo sencillito, súper fácil de hacer y que cumple dos funciones, ya que además decorar tiene utilidad práctica en el hogar, ya que se puede usar como posavasos, mini bandeja decorativa, también lo puedes usar para dejar algunas prendas en tu mesita de noche o tocador, o como en mi caso para colocar un pequeño cactus que tiene Miranda en su habitación y de esta forma proteger la mesita de noche de posibles goteos.
Hello, Hive community! It’s another rainy day on the island today, which makes me happy, as it really was quite hot and this light rain is doing the plants we have at home a world of good. So I’m happy and grateful for these days without so much sun and heat.
Today I want to share a simple little project with you – it’s super easy to make and serves two purposes, as well as being decorative, it has a practical use in the home: it can be used as a coaster, a mini decorative tray, or you can use it to leave a few items of clothing on your bedside table or dressing table, or, as in my case, to hold a small cactus that Miranda has in her room, thus protecting the bedside table from any potential drips.
Se trata de un posavasos de yeso en color lila claro con pigmentos en un tono morado intenso, que como les dije fue creado para la habitación de Miranda, específicamente para colocar una mini maceta, y de esa forma cuidar la superficie blanca de la mesita de noche, y la verdad es que es un proyecto bastante sencillo y tiene muchísimos usos en casa, así que por aquí les dejo el paso a paso.
This is a light lilac plaster coaster with deep purple pigments, which, as I mentioned, was created for Miranda’s bedroom, specifically to hold a small plant pot and thus protect the white surface of the bedside table. It’s actually a fairly simple project with lots of uses around the house, so here’s a step-by-step guide.

Como pueden ver son poquísimos materiales, así que esto les da una idea de lo sencillo que es este proyecto, y para comenzar vamos a preparar la mezcla, que a diferencia del proyecto anterior no se trata de una masa para modelar, sino de una mezcla más bien líquida elaborada exclusivamente con yeso y agua, y lo primero que haremos será agregar el yeso en un envase y poco a poco ir incorporando el agua, en mi caso lo hice una cucharada a la vez, mezclaba y continuaba.
As you can see, there are very few materials, so this gives you an idea of just how simple this project is. To begin with, we’re going to prepare the mixture, which—unlike the previous project—isn’t modelling clay, but rather a fairly runny mixture made solely from plaster and water, and the first thing we’ll do is add the plaster to a container and gradually add the water; in my case, I did it one spoonful at a time, mixing as I went along.
Una vez tenemos una mezcla homogénea con consistencia de papilla infantil agregamos el color, y en este caso decidí utilizar anilina, que es un pigmento que solía utilizar para teñir la porcelana fría, pero ustedes en casa pueden usar colorante vegetal o pintura al frío, solo tengan en cuenta que si el color es líquido va a alterar la consistencia de la mezcla y posiblemente deban agregar un poco más de yeso.
Once you have a smooth mixture with the consistency of baby food, add the colouring. In this case, I decided to use aniline, which is a pigment I used to use for colouring cold porcelain, but at home you can use food colouring or cold-set paint. Just bear in mind that if the colouring is liquid, it will alter the consistency of the mixture and you may need to add a little more plaster.
Una vez tenemos lista la mezcla, el siguiente paso es agregarla en el molde y como pueden ver yo utilicé una tapa de margarina que tenía tanto el tamaño como la profundidad ideal para este proyecto, y lo que hice fue lavar y secarla muy bien para finalmente agregar un poco de anilina en diferentes zonas de la tapa y seguidamente agregué la mezcla hasta llegar al borde de la medida y volví a colocar un poco más de pigmento, di algunos golpes sobre la superficie para eliminar burbujas y dejé secar.
Once the mixture is ready, the next step is to pour it into the mould. As you can see, I used a margarine tub lid, which was the perfect size and depth for this project, and what I did was wash and dry it thoroughly, then add a little aniline dye to different areas of the lid. I then poured in the mixture until it reached the rim, added a little more pigment, tapped the surface a few times to remove any bubbles, and left it to dry.
Como les dije con anterioridad, para el proceso de secado hay que seguir ciertas pautas, y la primera es tener paciencia, ya que es un proceso que puede tomar de 24 a 48 horas, pero realmente depende del tamaño de la pieza y del clima, así que toca ser pacientes para no dañar nuestra pieza y por aquí les dejo algunos tips:
- Deja secar en una habitación a temperatura ambiente
- Evita habitaciones con aire acondicionado
- Evita la exposición directa a fuentes de calor
- No toques hasta que hayan transcurrido 24 horas como mínimo
- Para saber si tu pieza está completamente seca debes tocarla, y si se siente a temperatura ambiente está lista, sin por el contrario la sientes fría, aún le falta tiempo de secado
Si sigues todos estos pasos vas a lograr un secado óptimo de tu pieza de yeso.
As I mentioned earlier, there are certain guidelines to follow for the drying process, and the first is to be patient, as it can take between 24 and 48 hours – though this really depends on the size of the piece and the weather. So we need to be patient to avoid damaging our piece, and here are a few tips:
- Leave it to dry in a room at room temperature
- Avoid rooms with air conditioning
- Avoid direct exposure to heat sources
- Do not touch it until at least 24 hours have passed
- To check if your piece is completely dry, touch it; if it feels at room temperature, it is ready. If, on the other hand, it feels cold, it still needs more time to dry
If you follow all these steps, you will achieve optimal drying of your plaster piece.
En mi caso a las 24 horas gracias a que el yeso se contrae al secar pude retirarla del molde sin problemas para darle vuelta y continuar con su secado pues tiende a doblarse un poco hacia arriba cuando son piezas planas y delgadas y al darle vuelta retomó su forma y terminó de secar completamente, lo que me tomó dos días y medio, y como ven el resultado es muy bonito, un acabado artesanal súper lindo que en este caso decidí dejar mate, pero si desean pueden sellar con barniz para brindar mayor protección a la pieza dependiendo del uso que quieran darle.
In my case, after 24 hours – thanks to the fact that plaster shrinks as it dries – I was able to remove it from the mould without any problems, turn it over and let it continue drying, as it tends to curve upwards slightly when the pieces are flat and thin; turning it over allowed it to regain its shape and dry completely, which took me two and a half days, and as you can see, the result is very pretty – a lovely handcrafted finish which, in this case, I decided to leave matt, but if you wish, you can seal it with varnish to provide greater protection for the piece, depending on how you intend to use it.
Como pueden ver este proyecto es muy sencillo y con un resultado súper lindo y les cuento que en el molde, antes de agregar la mezcla pueden incorporar no solo pigmento, sino cualquier cosa que deseen para decorar su posavasos, así que el cielo es el límite.
As you can see, this project is very simple and produces a really lovely result. I should also mention that, before adding the mixture to the mould, you can add not only pigment but anything else you like to decorate your coaster, so the sky’s the limit.
