Care Package
I got the care package the other day. I heard that there was another strike at Canada Post, but it wasn’t like the last one, which affected many people’s lives near the end of the year. This time, things weren’t too tense. Of course, I feel sorry for the workers who have to go on strike, but I’m glad I received the package safely. On the other hand, my own parcel also arrived quicker than I expected.
My mother’s care package is always very thoughtful and well-crafted. I was surprised by how she packed everything herself. I’m a bit worried about the weight of the package—I never want her to carry it by herself. Also, I don’t want her to pack things in the hallway near the entrance, because the hallway is a bit colder than the rooms.
Anyway, I really enjoyed unpacking the parcel. My dog was also excited to watch me unpack. There was a dried fish pack for him to enjoy as a treat. He loves the sound of plastic packaging. There were also some treats for my student and his family. They love Japanese sweets and the packaging style, and they often say they enjoy unwrapping them.
There were many familiar-looking foods, unfamiliar new products, and more. Especially for the coming New Year’s Eve meal, my mother prepared some ingredients. I usually make my grandmother’s special recipe called ozōni. For the ozōni soup, we need mochi rice cakes. My husband loves mochi so much, so she really wanted to send some to us.
I stocked my pantry with everything she sent. The first thing I made was curry and rice. Luckily or not, the closest supermarket in my area recently started selling more international foods, and they expanded the section more than before when they finished their renovation. It’s definitely related to the tariff changes. There are fewer U.S. products and more Canadian and international items on the shelves. I noticed there are more Japanese products, although they are still pricey. That’s why the care package was so helpful. At the natural food store, I also noticed that some U.S. products are no longer available. I guess I need to adapt to the recent changes in food culture.
The curry and rice turned out very tasty. Actually, I forgot to add potatoes, even though I wanted to. But the taste was still very good without them. I used ground turkey, carrots, garlic, onion, and shimeji mushrooms. I also topped it with boiled broccoli, fresh mini tomatoes, and cooked perogies. My body became so warm even though it’s freezing outside. I’ll cook and enjoy the products from Japan little by little, with happy feelings.

ケアパッケージ
先日、ケアパッケージが無事に届きました。カナダポストでまたストライキがあったと聞きましたが、去年の年末のように多くの人の生活に影響が出るほどではないようです。今回はそれほど緊迫した状況ではなかったようで安心しました。ストライキに参加せざるを得ない労働者の方々には気の毒ですが、無事に届いてよかったです。私が送った荷物も思っていたより早く向こうに届きました。
母のケアパッケージは、いつもよく考えられていねいに梱包されています。今回も自分で全部詰めてくれたことに驚きました。かなり重いのが心配で、絶対に一人で運んでほしくありませんが、玄関近くの廊下で荷造りしてほしくもありません。廊下は部屋より寒いので冷えてほしくありません。
荷物を開ける時間をすごく楽しみました。犬も一緒にワクワクして見ていました。彼には、おやつの乾燥魚のパッケージが入っていました。パッケージのカサカサする音が大好きなのです。それから、生徒さんとそのご家族へのお菓子も入っていました。日本のお菓子と包装のスタイルが大好きで、開封す流のが楽しいとよく話してくれます。
懐かしい食品や、見慣れない新しいものなど、いろいろと詰まっていました。とくに、もうすぐやってくる大晦日のための食材を母が準備してくれていました。私は毎年、祖母の特別なレシピでお雑煮を作ります。お雑煮には餅が必要です。主人は大のお餅好きなので、母はぜひ送りたかったようです。
もらった食材をパントリーにずらっと並べました。その中からまずはカレーライスを作りました。良いのか悪いのかどうか…、近くのスーパーが改装後にインターナショナルな輸入食品のコーナーを広げ、以前より品揃えが豊富になりました。おそらく関税の影響で、アメリカ産の商品が減り、カナダや他の国の商品が増えたように感じます。日本の商品も増えましたが、まだまだ高価です。だからこそ、このケアパッケージは本当にありがたかったです。自然食品店でも、アメリカの商品が買えなくなりました。最近の食品事情に合わせて、自分も少しずつ慣れていかないといけないのかもしれません。
カレーライスはとても美味しくできました。実は入れようと思っていたじゃがいもを入れ忘れてしまったのですが、なくても十分美味しかったです。ターキーのひき肉、にんじん、にんにく、玉ねぎ、しめじを使い、茹でたブロッコリーやミニトマト、ピエロギも添えました。外はとても寒いのですが、カレーで身体がぽかぽかになりました。日本から届いた食材は、これから少しずつ楽しみながらいただこうと思います。
