Dieters, Get Out Of Here

As you can see, I'm trying to express myself in an elegant and polite way in the title, instead of saying what I'd jokingly say 🙊. It says in the rules that we have to behave and that's what I'm doing. (Not that I'd use such words on the chain, but it would look really funny and appropriate here.)

We have a lot of events on a weekly, monthly bases, hosted by the municipality and the tendency is to support small businesses, crafters, for several reasons. Industrialization had its time, factories, corporations took over, but that doesn't mean small businesses, small producers has to suffer.

For example, there's a place in the city, where every third Friday of the month these small producers have their market. It's a day totally dedicated to them and the initiative is one to support, because you can have continuity in buying your favorite products. This is not the only such initiative, there are many others as well and there's one in particular that I'd like to write about today.

It's becoming a regular event already as there has been several years before, when the so called "Bacon Fest" has been organized.

The first event was organized in 2011 and since then, it has become a respectable gastro-cultural event that is taking place in several Transylvanian cities and in 2025, there was the organized a first event in Hungary as well.

Their motto is:

Pork is a man's best friend.

Do I agree? Well, it depends on the man as it is certainly not mine. I respect them as any other animals, but ... there's a huge distance between me and them. But regardless, yesterday I went to visit the event and see what these gastro enthusiasts come up with this year.

Visitors are greeted by this happy fellow, right at the entrance. It's a very funny, furry fellow, that is smiling at you and we can call it the mascot of the festival.

The festival starts a few steps further, where you have the chance to see what the organizers and participants (on the selling side) mean.

For those of you not familiar with the culture, these are traditional products both in Romania and Hungary. The flavoring differs from ... should say region to region, but the truth is, the old saying "as many houses, as many customs" applies here too and each producer, seller has their own flavoring. This makes the culinary world so interesting and exciting.

There has been times when people were standing in line for hours, to be able to buy half a kilo of meat or a piece of sausage, but those times are long gone and today the supply exceeds demand, the buying power decreases year by year, so you need to work magic to be able to keep your existing customers and gain new ones. Showing up with an attractive display is one of the tricks you can do and this vendor sure did their homework in this regard.

It's a house made of bacon and sausage. The funny thing is, there's a saying in Hungarian. We say "the fence is not made of sausage" and use it in situations where people try their luck abroad and come home at the end as they could not find a better life in their chosen country. Well, here the fence was made of sausage :)

As it happens at these events, tasting most of the products is not only available, but encouraged as well. At least you know what you're buying.

20260227_143828a.JPG

Even though the event is dedicated to bacon and meat in general, other food and non food products are allowed too.

Like these knives. There's a region in Transylvania where they say guys without a knife in their pocket can't be considered man. Knives can be considered white weapons by law, so carrying one can be risky, but I know people who can hardly resist a nice pocket knife like these.

20260227_144234a.JPG

They say a good meal without a good wine is like eaten by a dog, so here you go.

For me, this is where things start to get interesting. A good cheese can't be beaten by anything, unless it's a matching wine. These craft cheeses were calling my name, as always.

Now you're probably wondering what I bought or what I tasted. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I took a right turn and came home 😂 Why? Because I'm sticking to my weight loss diet and besides, these products may be traditional, may look good, but are unhealthy, especially for those with gallbladder problems, like me. So this was a hands off event, but it was fun.

oh we got exactly the same markets here, it's either local producers or stuff from other regions, price are absolutely not cheap, better to go at a local farmer... but for a walk and some photos like you did it's good enough

I know you have a lot of similar markets and food, and as you say, nothing is cheap at these markets ever.

who doesn't love eating dead pigs lol, they can handle any seasoning any method of cooking, from breakfast to dinner with any accompaniment.

I had a couple of pork loin steaks last night simple salt and pepper seasoning, served with apple sauce and mashed potato and black pepper gravy. Heaven.

Tonight it is back to basics spag. bol.

oink fucking oink

I rarely have pork and mostly choose chicken or occasionally fish if I can 🤪 but I'm the exception as pork is very popular in my country and Europe in general.

LOL yummy. tbh don't like fish and chicken is pretty boring

What are you doing to me? I’m about to lose my mind 😄

None of this even exists in Thailand in this form, and I want to eat all of it so badly! Such a delicious post!

peakd - works just awful
ecency - works awful
Is this the only issue (is it the internet?) or is it loading slowly for everyone?

I don't know what's going on but it's possible the problem is coming from the image hosting servers. I had enough already.

😂😂😂😂😂

Sending you a pack or sausages and bacon. I suppose these dishes are popular in Russia too 😎

Sausages and deli meats are something a Russian person can hardly live without 😄
But I gave them up about eight years ago after I saw with my own eyes how they’re actually made 👀
Thank you

I am also avoiding processed food as much as possible. Better cook your own meal and know what you're eating.

Wow... wow... wow!!! I love sausages, chorizo, cheese... everything savoury, I love it! I'm not on a diet, so I'm not leaving, I'm staying to feast my eyes! Although I have to say I love the sweet stall... that's what I liked best, but what a beautiful house, made like that... eating it little by little.😆

I hate chorizo, but some sausage occasionally is ok. Obviously after my diet is over.

I love chorizo, OK... I'll leave you the sausages and take the chorizo.😆

We don't have chorizo here 😆😆😆🤪

😆 Here, yes, and lots of them! In many sizes and flavours!🤣

What delicacies! You would want to taste everything! I have been a vegetarian for many years, but had to switch to meat. Eating too much grain was not good for my stomach and diabetes.

I'm really sorry to hear you are dealing with diabetes, but I'm glad ypu can eat meat again.

Should be called The Pork Fest and you can keep the cheese and wine as the meat is just fine for me. I love trying out new foods and regional flavors sounds kind of perfect.

😆 I should call you Mr. Fussy. I'd be happy with the cheese and wive, although I'm rarely drinking.

That looks like a very interesting market. I would have loved to try some of the sausages. We are waiting for the local farmer markets to open here later this spring. I always enjoy the wares and food.

It was indeed interesting and so many were buying a small piece of everything.

Why are markets not organized during winter at your place?

They have arts and craft markets, but not foods in the winter. Soome of the art and craft markets occasionally have baked goods though. However, the fruits, veggies and other farmer goods have to wait until spring. Usually late spring.

Greetings,
The sausage fence was hilarious. Such a fun glimpse into the festival culture.
Sticking to your diet despite all those tempting cheeses calling your name.
That takes serious willpower.
Peace

Yes, it's not easy when there's temptation everywhere, but you focus on your goal and keep to the plan.

it is very simple : what we eat, say and think in life becomes our reality at some point in the future.

What draws my attention most are the cheeses. I’ve never been in the presence of such variety… A glass of wine and a cheese board sounds perfect for a Sunday. Right now, I’d love to have that plan somewhere quiet, by the sea. Just listening to the ebb and flow of the waves.

(Well, a bit later, because it’s only 7:38 am 😅)

You've never been in the presence of such variety? This is nothing, just a few pieces. You should see the other markets, or the offer of the supermarket or the local cheese makers.

Cheese with a glass of wine is a good plan. 😎

Which weekly events stand out as must-attends for beginners?

You are really strong to stand still in front of such a temptation, lol!

This looks like a pretty awesome market! We have a farmers market in the summer that they run on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. My wife and I are usually camping or working, so we don't get to attend as often as we would like.
