We visited a café called 'Wheatcroft's Wharf' by the Cromford Canal, Derbyshire, UK, for a relaxed lunch and coffee stop. We sat inside right next to the canal. We'd tried various cafés, but all were shut, so this was our last hope.
The old warehouse and wharf area have been carefully restored and are now looked after by the 'Arkwright Society'. The second old warehouse, built in 1824 and once used for storing goods, has also been restored and is now the café. The building has a lot of character and feels full of history. It’s well kept and fits nicely with the canal. I'm glad they didn't just leave it to deteriorate.
To drink, we ordered two cappuccinos, one made with oat milk and one decaffeinated. Both were good and arrived quickly. As it was mid morning on a Monday, we were the only people in the café. It was probably a good job really, as it gets quite busy at times, so you can be waiting a lot longer. I haven't got a lot of patience when I'm waiting for food.
For food, we had a veggie sausage cob and an Eggs Benedict with ham. The veggie sausage cob was very basic but filled a gap, and the Eggs Benedict was nicely cooked.
The café had outdoor seating as well but it was too hot to sit outside.
It’s a nice place to stop if you’re walking along the canal, especially with the views. There are other things to do as well, such as birdwatching, canoeing, or hiring a restored narrow boat throughout the year, that is run by the 'Friends of Cromford Canal'.
