On a regular day, I usually go for something affordable for lunch. Most of the time, I spend around SGD 5.00 ($3.85) on a simple meal. However, today felt like one of those days when I wanted something out of the ordinary, so I got myself the dry version of Bak Kut Teh! I also grabbed a refreshing iced Kopi. In total, I spent SGD 10.00 ($7.70). It’s beyond my usual lunch budget, but totally worth it!
In fact, this was my first time trying the dry version of Bak Kut Teh, which is usually served as a soup. Somehow, someone had the wild idea to turn this traditionally soupy dish, literally called “Meat Bone Tea/Soup,” into a dry version. LOL. But you might be wondering: why would someone like me go for the dry version instead of the classic soup?
Simply because the weather was warm at lunchtime. Normally, I’d eat Bak Kut Teh at night or when it’s raining. But since I was already craving something nice, I went for it and chose the not-so-warm version. Or at least, that’s what I thought it would be.
I didn’t realize that the dry version would be loaded with tons of onions, garlic, and chopped chilies 😄
Flavor wise, I loved it! However, the heat from the chilies had me sweating while eating. LOL. But it was just too delicious to stop. I enjoyed the flavor of the dry version so much, I almost forgot about the soup that came with it. By the end of the meal, I only took a few sips from the bowl and left it at that.
Honestly, I can now say this dry version is my favorite. No offense to the original creator of Bak Kut Teh, but times have changed. Of course, I still crave the soup version, but I’ll save that for when the weather calls for something warm and comforting.
Anyway, the best part of this dish was actually the meat itself. They gave me a premium cut, hence the higher price. The soup version is about 20% cheaper, which is slightly annoying to think about, but since the flavor was spot on, I didn’t mind paying the extra SGD 2.00 for the better version.
By the way, it was a great call to get an iced Kopi. It balanced out the heat from the chilies and somehow made my appetite even more intense. LOL. I think it’s a great combo! Not the healthiest, but definitely enjoyable. No complaints here! Hahaha.
This dry version of Bak Kut Teh was truly a delightful surprise and a memorable twist on a classic dish. Sometimes, stepping out of your usual routine leads to unexpectedly satisfying experiences. I’ll definitely be coming back for this again... especially on warm days when I want something bold, flavorful, and unforgettable.
