Hello dear hivers! I hope you’re doing well. I just want to share about my 1$ delicious homemade snack that my family enjoyed, and we were able to share with our neighbors as well.
Yes, you read it right, I only spent around 1 USD to cook this yummy afternoon snack for the whole family of five members, plus we also shared some bowls of it with our neighbors. Here in the Philippines, especially in the countryside, it is still our custom to share our food with our neighbors.
We call this snack ‘Champorado’, a Filipino sweet chocolate rice porridge. The term ‘Champorado’ comes from the Spanish word ‘champurrar’, which means ‘to mix’, which is exactly what we do with the cocoa powder for this snack.
So here we go, here are the ingredients that I used for this yummy snack.
- 1 cup rice (commonly, it must be glutinous rice, but in this recipe, I just used the ordinary rice)
- 1 can (206 grams) condensed milk
- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
- ¼ brown sugar
- 3.5 liters of water
Since I didn’t use glutinous rice here, and I have a lot of cocoa powder from my aunt, I only bought the sugar and milk, which cost me around 55Php (sugar – 18Php, condensed milk – 37Php). Today, the exchange rate for USD and Php is around 55 PHP per 1 USD.
How to make it
Simply wash the rice and add 3.5 liters of water. Bring it to a boil for around one hour.
While boiling the rice, prepare the cocoa mixture. Add hot water to the cocoa powder and mix until it softens and becomes watery. Set aside.
While boiling the rice, stir it once in a while. Continue boiling until rice becomes soft enough that it’s almost falling apart. The ordinary rice worked fine here if you don’t have glutinous rice.
Add the sugar, cocoa mixture, and condensed milk, then stir. Boil for another 3 minutes, and it’s done.
The yummy snack is now ready to serve. I put some in the bowl and made a heart-shaped design using milk. It just looks cute so I did it.
My nephews and nieces love the snack very much, and they kept coming back for more. We also gave some to our neighbors – my cousins and my sister’s family living nearby. I didn’t take a picture of them taking some bowls of Champorado from the pot since I was busy savoring the yummy snack, lol.
Indeed, this is a very budget-friendly snack for the family and the neighborhood, haha! And because I am battling with low blood pressure, I think this sweet chocolate rice porridge is perfect for me. And thankfully, no one in the family is experiencing high blood pressure, so the snack is fine for everyone.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I hope you enjoy and feel full while reading. 💜
