Happy Tuesday Hivers!
The rain here in our place is intense. It has been raining nonstop since yesterday, and it still hasn’t stopped.
But anyway, today I’d like to share one of the Philippines’ cultural traditions, the fiesta celebration. This practice has been around for hundreds of years and is still being celebrated up to this day.

Although my mom no longer lives in Cebu, she continues the tradition of celebrating the fiesta of Señor Sto. Niño. Every January, Cebu City truly comes alive for this celebration, which is also why the Sinulog festival takes place during this month.

Since I’m here in Leyte, it’s just the two of us who say the novena prayer for nine consecutive days.
Aside from saying the novena prayer, we also decorated for the fiesta. We made banderitas and hung them outside our house. In the Philippines, every fiesta is always accompanied by banderitas.

The day before the fiesta, we prepared the plates and utensils, and of course, the desserts. We decided to order some food for the celebration so it wouldn’t be too much work, since it’s just the two of us, my mom and me.

During the fiesta, after we finished attending the Holy Mass, the presiding priest and his altar boys came over to our house for lunch. Since we also invited our neighbors and friends, there were quite a few people at home.
We didn’t set up many tables and chairs because there were plenty of places to sit outside our house. After some of them got their food, they went straight to the beach to eat there.

This is one of the Filipino traditions we continue, passed down from our ancestors, the celebration of the fiesta and sharing it with relatives and neighbors. Most of the time, fiestas are lively and full of fun. But for us, since it’s just our household celebrating here in Leyte, we kept it simple, we offered prayers and had a modest sharing of food on the feast day.
