Hello Asean Hive Community
I think recently I have posted too much negativity on food. As a foodie who is trying to be good, I believe it is time for me to share something positive about food. Let me share you my lunch yesterday, which I ordered a simple but very traditional food.
Nasi goreng, or fried rice... Tell me what so special about this one? Well it is nasi goreng kampung, or if we translate it into English, it becomes Village Fried Rice. Nasi goreng kampung means that this was how people in the past made their nasi goreng, or fried rice, in their home in rural area or in their villages.
They are many definition of Nasi Goreng Kampung, some said it is a homemade style fried rice, some said it is the cheapest nasi goreng which is sold through food carts... But what I believe it is the correct one, or at least the right one for and from me, is a Fried Rice that is cooked and served a bit plain with no soy sauce or chili sauce.
So the rice is still in white, no black or red coloration.
There are not many people selling nasi goreng kampung nowadays. We have plenty of nasi goreng sellers, stalls, and even in some fancy restaurants, but not many who can make and still want to make Nasi Goreng Kampung. I have to order from outside, in one of the cheapest nasi goreng cart near my office which by happens the seller still cook it.
I wonder why he put my Nasi Goreng into Styrofoam box like this. It is not the cheapest package you can get, he should use the cheapest, which is a food paper wrap. No need of box like this.
Ok this is my Nasi Goreng, with a pale white coloration. No red color from chili sauce or chili paste, and it doesn't use any soy sauce, whether it's the sweet soy or the salty one. Some say Nasi Goreng Kampung uses salt soy sauce, well I believe it is not, no Traditional Indonesian food uses salt soy sauce.
Actually I am very impressed with this meal. I spend almost 1 USD, around $0.95 precisely and the food should be said perfect for the price. It has a good portion, which is not too small or too large. Well I think there is no too large portion anyway for a take out order.
However what impresses me a lot is the taste. It is perfect, I mean not super duper delicious, but the taste for the Nasi Goreng Kampung is perfect. It is not salty at all, Nasi Goreng Kampung should not come in salty taste, it is different than most Chinese fried rice. It has groovy and smoky flavor, and it has a kick of spiciness from some hot pepper cuts.
Somehow I think I find a hidden gem here, a simple stall that still sell a traditional Indonesian-style fried rice with simple seasonings, strong flavors, and a rustic village touch.
Ok that's all my post today, thanks for stopping by, and have a nice day all!!
