I believe it is a natural instinct. The world is full of people; still there is someone choosing I. Because this "I" knows s/he is not perfect, and sees through his flaws pretty easily. That is one reason. The other one, I can think of is: we are insecure beings. We are afraid that people - even loved one - will leave us for some reason. While we just want them to stay with or without flaws. Love has some special ability of doing this, that is why we call it "love".
