Hi Everyone,

Oshino Village is a great spot for trying local street food and traditional Japanese snacks. Most of the food stalls and small shops are run by locals and offer regional specialties made with mountain spring water and seasonal ingredients.

As we walked from the carpark to Oshino Village, there were already lines of stores filled with local snacks ready to be sold to visitors. Inside Oshino Village, there are also market stores selling traditional snacks and food for visitors to purchase. A few of the things we tried like sweet rice dumpling for 100 yen. They are just like dangos made from rice flour and water. They’re kind of like mochi but firmer and meant to be eaten on the go or easily. Oshino's version often uses spring water from Mt. Fuji in the dough, making the texture extra clean and smooth as we were told by the shop owner. Our one had a nice red bean filling much different to what we normally get at the supermarkets.

Another specialty we tried was a special tofu which was sold inside the village. There was a choice of hot or cold. Nama Tofu (生とうふ) – Fresh Tofu often served with a bit of soy sauce and grated ginger or green onion. Our one also had a topping of miso paste mix. The tofu was super creamy, and the flavour of the soybeans made the dish memorable. The warm tofu was perfect for the winter cold. You could also buy some of them home if you lived close by.

If you want something more Western, we tried a Japanese/Korean-inspired hot dog on a stick. It is a sausage or choice of filling with bread coated and deep-fried (like a corn dog), grilled and served plain or with Japanese-style sauces. We didn’t want any sauce and had it plain. It wasn’t cheap but the stick kept the kids quiet as they were hungry. However we have noticed that this store was very popular as I think it balances out the more traditional snacks like dango or tofu we had before.
