This recipe was inspired by a post on one of the social media apps on my smartphone. At first, I was hesitant to try it, thinking it would fail—it looked easy, but trust me, the final step was actually quite tricky in my opinion. This milk mochi is made with just four ingredients: milk, glutinous rice flour, granulated sugar, and shredded coconut as a topping. It’s truly special with its authentic flavor—you’ve got to try making it at home.

As a milk lover, this is definitely a new dish for me. It’s amazing how milk can be turned into simple mochi without the hassle of shaping it into balls or adding fillings—just cook it, pour it into a mold, and serve. Some people call this “chewy milk,” but I think “milk mochi slices” is a more fitting name. Let’s take a look at the steps to make it!

Ingredients

500 ml whole milk
70 grams glutinous rice flour
100 grams granulated sugar
Shredded dried coconut, to taste

Instructions

Combine the glutinous rice flour and milk in a saucepan, and add the granulated sugar.

Stir until well combined, then cook over low heat and wait until the mixture thickens.

Stir clockwise throughout the cooking process, stirring constantly to prevent sticking. Once thickened, turn off the stove.

Then pour the mixture into a square container, let it cool, and allow it to set in the container. Next, cut it into pieces and coat them with shredded coconut.

I served my milk mochi on a serving plate. The final step—while waiting for the mochi to set—was a bit of a challenge because I didn’t want it to get too hard. I’m pretty sure the mistake was that I didn’t cook it long enough, so it wasn’t completely dry, and it was still a bit runny when I poured it into the mold. Since it was already done, I went ahead and coated it with shredded coconut right away.

As a result, the pieces weren’t perfectly square and they were still a bit sticky, but they tasted absolutely delicious. The sweet, savory coconut and milky flavors really came through. In my opinion, this is a truly delightful milk cake that’s best enjoyed chilled after being refrigerated for a short while.

Your posts are great, and the photos you post are beautiful too. I'm not quite sure. Do you have your own restaurant or do you cook so well at home?
