There’s a type of dish I only have once in a blue moon—LOL. Sometimes I even force myself to eat it, since I’m not really into healthy stuff. There’s nothing wrong with the dish—it’s actually quite nice—but I just don’t find it as appetizing compared to other soup dishes. Still, I feel the need to have it every now and then, just to add some variety to my meals.
Lately, I’ve been eating a lot of junk food and fast food, and I’ve started to feel guilty about it. So, to make myself feel better, I treated myself to a bowl of Pork Ribs ABC Soup for dinner last night.
If you think about it, this kind of dish is so simple that I could probably make it at home. It only has four ingredients: carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, and pork ribs. That’s all it takes—plus some seasoning. However, it’s the way it’s steamed that makes it tricky to replicate. I’ve tried making it before, but I just couldn’t get the same result.
I can't seem to achieve the delicate texture of the dish. It requires specific equipment to cook it to that level of perfection. When I tried boiling it in a regular pot, the tomatoes and potatoes disintegrated before the pork ribs even became tender—LOL. That’s when I realized I should probably leave this one to the experts.
Anyway, it wasn’t that expensive. A bowl of Pork Ribs ABC Soup only costs SGD 5.00, and a bowl of rice is just SGD 1.00. That’s the average price of a meal at a hawker food center, which I think is pretty reasonable—especially considering the effort it would take to cook it myself.
I found this stall at City Gate Mall along Beach Road. They opened recently, but I hadn’t tried them until now. It actually took me a while to give them a shot because their menu didn’t look all that appetizing at first. But now that I’ve tried one of their simplest dishes and ended up satisfied, I’ll definitely revisit them to try their special dishes.
The steamed salted chicken drumstick caught my eye, and that’s what I’m planning to try next. One thing I really like about this stall is their variety of rice options: plain white rice, brown rice, and yam-flavored rice. I think I’m going to go with the yam-flavored rice next time and pair it with the salted chicken. The blend of sweet yam and salty chicken sounds like a great combination, and I’m really looking forward to it.
Overall, this meal reminded me that simple dishes can be just as satisfying as the more indulgent ones. It’s great to discover a spot that offers comfort food with a healthy twist at an affordable price. I’m definitely looking forward to trying more from their menu on my next visit!
