My family's bento preferences /

in Foodies Bee Hive2 years ago

When we have just got to know each other, I made onigiri for lunch and my partner thought the nori (seeweed) was wrapping and started peeling it off like a comedy. It was quite new to me as I'm from the Onigiri country.

When my partner and I went on a trip to Japan to research longevity foods, a fisherman served us a lot of his specialty, wakame (also seaweed), and he couldn't digest it well. He suffered for the blocked feeling in his stomach for few days. I later learned that there are people in Europe who cannot digest seaweed well. So until recently, I had thought that my partner did not like seaweed, including nori.

My daughter likes onigiri, but the few times I made onigiri for her snack at school, she told me, "I'm sorry mama, but I don't want to bring onigiri to school because some kids will say what's this what's this?" I think @djynn told me this before, and I thought ah ja, it had happened to us too.

So when we have a picnic as a family, it is often a hassle to bring rice balls for me and my daughter and sandwiches for my partner........................... It can be just a big sandwich box but I'm happy to receive a Japanese food request from my daughter.

The other day, when we ran out of bread, I tried to put a sushi roll in my daughter's lunch box. I thought there would be complaints later, but she said, "We all know and love Sushi. It was delicious." It was a positive surprise!

My partner also likes sushi rolls. He doesn't peel the nori off unlike he did for onigiri. Once, when he left our daughter at the market I serve food and went on a trip, I gave him a box of vegan sushi rolls. He was proud on eating it on the train.

I like both onigiri and sushi, but my German team is happy with sushi and not so much for onigiri bento. It seems that the level of recognition probably has a lot to do with it.

Today both my daughter and partner brought super typical German bento.

Even though we have lived together for more than 10 years, there are still new discoveries. I enjoy it 😉

I love all these images!! it is too bad that your partner can't digest seaweed well. I wonder if it just takes time? My ancestry is pretty much all European but I grew up in a place with a lot of Japanese influence and my sister and I were both crazy about sushi and Anime so we grew up eating sushi and watching lots of anime movies. Now I often eat nori cooked in soups which seems like a good way to consume seaweed instead of raw. Anyway, I think it is sweet that your daughter requests rice balls and that you also accommodate your partner's preferences too.

Happy to read your comment. I forgot where I read about Europeans and seaweed digestion but the reason was that it's new to Europeans (maybe except for people in oceanside). It's same for us, some of Japanese said to be not good in digesting milk. Luckily I don't have the trouble and enjoy cheese in Germany 😁

What a luck your daughter and partner (well partially at least) have with you making those beautiful sushis!! To me sushi is this one food I absolutely love but it always feels like a mission to make (mostly because I rarely have all the ingredients at hand).
Anyways so much love and beauty in those lunchboxes you make:)

When you have rice and seaweed, you can make it! Other parts are flexible. I just roll things I have in my fridge 😊 ... but I wonder how did I made it when I was visiting Albania 😂 I only remember soy sauce was extremely expensive there.

Oke that's nice to hear ...takes some pressure off😁 I'll give it a go, just to have seaweed at hand!😊
Eeh yes true in some countries soy sauce is crazy expensive....

I don't know about Japanese food, only sushi, I know that your gastronomy is more than that and that you use many spices that give a special flavor to the food, I like sushi it but the tempura ones I still don't dare to eat the ones that are completely raw

Yay! 🤗
