Rain, Chicks, PDC, Garlic Harvest, Bees, Peas, Beets, Case, Rose, Grilling - Saturday

in Homesteading2 days ago

The rain was still falling yesterday morning but it didn't last long. It was really nice for keeping things cooler and thankfully the rest of the day stayed nice.

I noticed the Fly Catcher was not on her nest so I went out quick to get a couple shots of the chicks to see how many there are now.

All 4 eggs look to have hatched and she has her work cut out for her keeping all of them fed. Much of the day I would see the pair flitting about in the trees then winging back to the nest, then back out to the trees.

The PDC was on and Littler got spanked by Bunting who then lost to Price the winner of the tourney.

The sun was out so I headed up to the garlic rows to harvest more. First was the Northern White which gave me 50, a few shy of what I planted.

Only 9 of the Georgian Crystal were ready but they got strung and hung in the shed.

Then I pulled the Transylvanian and got 94 of them. I have 5 more varieties to harvest.

Still some time on the remaining garlic.

With the sun out the bees were in fast forward and mobbing the entrance.

IMG_20250705_133425.jpg

There were some seriously fat pollen packs coming in on legs.

IMG_20250705_133432.jpg

This time the peas were much more loaded and gave me over a pound which I was putting in pockets since it overflowed my hand capacity.

IMG_20250705_144153.jpg

Then I went through the beets and thinned again.

IMG_20250705_145634.jpg

I washed them off then trimmed the tops off which gave me 3 pounds of the Chioggia beets. They are striped inside.

I needed to finish sewing the velcro to my phone case that goes on my flight deck. I only had a bit left to do so it is now ready for use.

We have this wild rose bush under the carport that suddenly exploded in growth the past week. That top leader grew 3 feet. I'm a bit annoyed it is getting so big and I need to figure out a way to keep it more contained.

The wild raspberry plants are producing but very tiny little berries. Likely not really good soil nutrients available right next to the creek.

I got the fire going in the evening and then grilled our bison burgers for dinner.

Out to soak for a while before bed.

Today I am going to Tekoa to fly while @stryeyz and the boys go up to pick berries. I HAVE to get a good flight in before Friday when I start my SIV course.

It's nice to see some harvest, isn't it? My garden is trailing behind yours, and I didn't (successfully) plant any of the early crops, like lettuce or radishes.

Nothing of mine was planted early, this year has been a bit of a shit show, so hence the spinach getting only one flush then bolting.

Interesting that you are getting rainfall and we are getting nothing at all!🤔
Everything you grow looks so lush and healthy, awesome harvest!👍😊

I attribute a lot of the health of my garden to the winter time grain additions. The spent brewing grain does wonders and I have seen the direct result year over year.

Best of all, you said this is free!👍🤗😊

Exactly! Free fertilizer is the best!

👍🤗😊

Those radishes look amazing!
