“A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.” – Walter Winchell

Yesterday, I had one of those days that reminded me how rare and beautiful true friendship is. My best friend from senior high school told me she went home from the city. Since entering university and stepping into our busy college lives, we barely see each other. Sometimes an entire year passes before we meet again, yet it never feels like time has created a distance between us. She has always been my low-maintenance best friend. We do not need constant messages on social media or endless phone calls to maintain our bond. Even when days and months go by without talking, our friendship remains steady and unwavering, ready to pick up exactly where we left off.

We decided to meet at my favorite café in San Remigio, Cebu which is the Milk+T Café. This place has become one of my go-to spots, not just for its cozy atmosphere and delicious food, but because it feels like a small haven where life slows down, if only for a moment. The café welcomed us with its familiar charm, the warm scent of roasted coffee beans mixing with the sweet aroma of baked goods. We found a corner seat by the window and settled in as if no time had passed since our last meeting.

Our ordered pork sisig, waffles, and Spanish lattes. The food arrived quickly, steaming and fragrant, and it felt like a small celebration of our reunion. Between bites and sips, we talked and laughed, catching up on everything that has happened in our lives. We shared stories from college, the challenges and triumphs we faced, and the little moments that made our days memorable. Even though it was only the second time we saw each other this year, our conversation flowed effortlessly, like we were never apart.

The converstaion naturally drifted back to our high school days. We laughed at our youthful crushes, the awkward moments that seemed monumental at the time, and the silly adventures we embarked on together. Memories surfaced like old photographs, each one a reminder of how long we have journeyed together as friends. And yet, our talk was not only about the past. We also shared our hopes and plans for the future, discussing the kind of careers we aspire to and the places we hope to see after graduation. It was comforting to know that even as our paths diverge, our support for one another remains unwavering.
Having her around reminded me that friendship does not need to be loud or constant to be genuine. It is measured in moments like these, when time seems irrelevant, and laughter and conversation flow naturally. There is really something extraordinary about knowing that someone knows your story, has shared your journey, and will continue to stand beside you even when life pulls you in different directions.

For me, it was more than just a day out. It left me with a thought that true friendship transcends distance and time. It is rare, precious, and comforting. And as I head home, I realized that no matter how busy life becomes, I can always count on those moments to reconnect, to laugh, and to cherish the bond that remains unshaken by the passing years.
