Homemade Mixed Dal Chawal | A Simple Pakistani Comfort Food

in Hive Food2 days ago

Assalamu Alaikum everyone!

I hope you are all doing well. Alhamdulillah, I am doing great too.
Today, I am excited to share one of my family's favorite comfort meals—Mixed Dal Chawal. This recipe is simple, nutritious, budget-friendly, and full of delicious flavors. It is perfect for lunch or dinner and tastes even better when served with fresh salad and lemon. I used a combination of Masoor Dal (Red Lentils), Moong Dal (Yellow Split Lentils), and Chana Dal (Split Chickpeas) to make this hearty dish.

Ingredients

For the Dal
½ cup Masoor Dal (Red Lentils)
½ cup Moong Dal (Yellow Split Lentils)
½ cup Chana Dal (Split Chickpeas)
1 Onion
½ tsp Turmeric Powder

For the Tarka

2 Onions, thinly sliced
Garlic
Green Chilies
Achar Gosht Masala
Salt
Roasted Cumin Powder
Coriander Powder
Kasuri Methi
Cooking Oil

For the Rice

Basmati Rice
Salt
Oil
Cumin Seeds

For Serving

Tomatoes
Cucumber
Onion
Mint
Lemon

Method

First, wash all three lentils thoroughly. Since Chana Dal takes longer to cook, place it in a pressure cooker with enough water until it becomes soft.

In another pot, add the Masoor Dal and Moong Dal along with one chopped onion and a little turmeric powder. Cook them until both lentils are soft and well combined.

Once the Chana Dal is cooked, mix it with the other two lentils and stir well.
Now it is time to prepare the tarka, which gives this dal its rich aroma and delicious taste. Heat some cooking oil in a pan and fry two thinly sliced onions until they become golden brown. Add the garlic and green chilies and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Next, add Achar Gosht Masala, salt, roasted cumin powder, and coriander powder. Stir everything well for a minute so the spices release their wonderful flavor. Pour this hot tarka over the cooked lentils and mix everything together. Finally, sprinkle some Kasuri Methi over the dal for an extra layer of aroma and taste.
For the rice, wash the basmati rice well and boil it with water, salt, oil, and cumin seeds. When most of the water has dried up, reduce the heat, cover the pot, and cook the rice on dum until perfectly fluffy.

Serve the hot Mixed Dal Chawal with a fresh salad of tomatoes, cucumber, onion, mint, and lemon. You can also enjoy it with boiled eggs, pickles, or yogurt if you like.

This is a simple homemade meal that is comforting, healthy, and packed with flavor. I hope you will give this recipe a try and enjoy it with your family. Thank you so much for visiting my blog.
