When a Cycling Stop Turns into a Great Hawker Find

in #food16 hours ago

One of the highlights of cycling, at least for me, is always the meal after cycling. I feel like it gives the whole activity an extra reward. Somehow, physical activity always makes food taste even better, and cycling is definitely one of those things that not only boosts my appetite, but also makes me crave an ice-cold, refreshing drink lol.

On this ride, I was somewhere around the Sengkang area when I noticed that the sky was starting to look a little too gloomy for comfort. The clouds were thick, and I honestly thought it might pour at any moment. Since I was not familiar with the estate, I decided to stop at a nearby hawker food center to rest for a while and check the weather forecast. I was a bit lost, but at the same time, I was glad to have found a place where I could catch my breath, cool down, and maybe settle my lunch too.

As I looked around the food center, one stall immediately caught my attention: Legacy of Prawn, since 1999.

To be fair, their signboard was so brightly lit that it almost felt like it was calling me over hahaha. Sometimes it really does not take much to influence my choice, and in this case, the stall made a pretty strong first impression. I saw a few people queueing too, which gave me a bit more confidence that this would be a good stop.

I ended up ordering one of my favorite combinations, the pork ribs prawn noodle, and I chose the dry version. It was not exactly cheap by hawker center standards, so I did hesitate a little at first. But sometimes, a slightly higher price also raises my expectations. I was hoping that the dish would justify it.

Thankfully, the dry version came with a separate bowl of soup, which is one of the reasons I usually prefer ordering noodles this way.

I get the rich, concentrated flavor of the sauce coating the noodles, but I still get to enjoy some warm broth on the side. To me, that is really the best of both worlds.

The noodles were the familiar yellow egg noodles. I know not everyone is a fan of this type of noodle, but personally, I am okay with it. When done right, it has that satisfying bite and springiness that works so well with bold sauces. In this bowl, the noodles were nicely coated in a rich, savory sauce that looked glossy and incredibly appetizing. You could immediately tell it was not going to be a light-tasting dish. The sauce had a slight spicy kick, but what stood out even more was how rich and aromatic it was. There was quite a lot of oil, but in this case, I think it really added to the flavor. It tasted like the oil had been infused with garlic and perhaps pork lard, which gave everything a deeper and more indulgent character.

The pork ribs were honestly one of the best parts of the bowl for me. They were tender, juicy, and flavorful. What I liked most was that they still had a bit of chew instead of becoming too soft or falling apart completely. That balance made them much more enjoyable to eat.

As for the prawns, they were a little smaller than I had hoped, so that was slightly disappointing. Still, I have to admit they tasted fresh, and I appreciated that most of the shells had already been peeled. That small detail made the meal a lot more convenient and enjoyable, especially when you are hungry and just want to dig in immediately LOL.

Overall, I really enjoyed this lunch stop more than I expected. What started as a quick shelter from possible rain turned into a satisfying hawker food discovery. Legacy of Prawn managed to deliver a bowl that was rich, comforting, and tasty enough to make me want to return. Next time, I would love to try another variation from their menu.

Bon appétit!
