A Pleasant Refuel at 834 Eating House After a Long Ride

in #foodyesterday

One of the things I really appreciate about cycling is how it naturally leads me to places that I probably would not have visited otherwise. After spending around three hours cycling around the Woodlands North and Admiralty area, I was already feeling tired, hungry, and definitely in need of a proper refuel. So I checked my map to see which food center was nearest to Admiralty, and that was how I ended up at 834 Eating House.

To be honest, I came here without any high expectations. This is not one of those popular and crowded hawker centers where many stalls compete for attention and where every corner seems to have something exciting to offer. Smaller food centers like this can sometimes feel a little underwhelming, especially when the choices are limited. In the case of 834 Eating House, there were only three food stalls and one drinks stall. The options were simple: Chinese cuisine, Indian food, and Malay food. No Western food at all, which some people might find incomplete, but personally I do not always go for Western food anyway, so I did not mind that too much.

Since I had just finished cycling, the first thing I needed was a drink. I went for my usual favorite, Teh-O Lemon Iced, which felt like the safest and most refreshing choice for that moment. It cost me SGD 2.00, which I honestly found a bit expensive for this part of the city. Maybe it is because the place does not get that many customers, so pricing works a little differently here. Still, once the cold drink hit, it was exactly what I needed. It was refreshing, slightly tangy, and perfect for cooling down after being under the sun for hours.

After that, I looked at the food stalls and decided to go with the Chinese stall. I ordered the Salted Fish Fried Rice, priced at SGD 6.00, and added a fried egg on top, which brought the total to SGD 7.00. I do not usually order salted fish fried rice that often, mainly because it tends to be a bit lacking in protein, and many stalls are usually not very generous with the salted fish. I have always assumed that is because salted fish is a more costly ingredient, so most places use it sparingly.

That is why this plate surprised me in such a good way.

From the first few bites, I could already tell that this stall was not being stingy with the salted fish at all. Almost every spoonful had little chunks of it mixed into the rice, and that made the whole dish so much more enjoyable. The salted fish pieces were not just tiny traces for flavor. They were actually noticeable, thick enough to chew on, and really satisfying. They gave the fried rice that deep savory richness that makes this dish special in the first place.

The fried rice itself was also nicely done. It had that familiar wok-fried aroma, with grains that were flavorful and not overly oily. There were bits of bean sprouts, egg, and even shrimp, which added more texture and made the dish feel more complete than I expected. Then of course, the fried egg on top made it even better. Once the yolk started to run into the rice, it added a soft richness that balanced the stronger salty notes of the fish. In a way, it made the flavor gentler and smoother, while also making the texture more enjoyable.

Overall, I have to say I was genuinely impressed by this meal. What started as a simple stop to refuel after a long cycling session turned into a surprisingly memorable food experience. 834 Eating House may look modest and may not have the widest selection, but this salted fish fried rice definitely left me with a very good impression. It is the kind of dish that quietly exceeds expectations, and those are often the most satisfying discoveries.

I will surely come back again to try the other dishes on their menu. For a place I visited without much expectation, it really gave me a reason to return soon.
