One of the things I have noticed about myself is that after a long cycling session, I will almost always crave one of two things: either a very refreshing drink or a nice warm bowl of soup. It really depends on the mood, but both feel equally satisfying after spending hours under the heat. Last Saturday, after cycling around the Kallang area, I found myself stopping by the food center at Lavender MRT station to see if there was anything interesting to eat.

That was when Haus Ban Mian caught my attention.

There are food places that immediately stand out not because they are flashy, but because you already have a good idea of what kind of comfort they can offer. For me, Haus Ban Mian was one of those places. I already knew that their soup tends to be simple and clean-tasting, and that was exactly what I was looking for at that moment. After a tiring ride, I did not want anything greasy or too heavy. I wanted something soothing, something light, and something that could help me feel refreshed again. The spinach dishes on their menu also made the stall even more appealing to me because it felt like a healthier choice after physical activity.
So I decided to order their Wanton Spinach Koka Mee.

At that point, I really was not looking for a heavy meal. What I wanted most was the soup and the vegetables, and this bowl seemed to offer exactly that. It felt like the kind of dish that is easy to enjoy on a regular basis, especially with the current warm weather. These days, the heat can be quite draining, especially if you are outdoors cycling for hours. Because of that, I actually think a soup-based dish like this makes a lot of sense. It helps me recover in a more comforting way, and somehow it also reduces my craving for sugary drinks after exercise, which is a nice bonus.

When the bowl arrived, it looked inviting right away. The bright green spinach gave the dish a very fresh and lively appearance, and the clear broth made everything look light and clean. It was not trying too hard to impress visually, but it had that simple charm that can be very appealing when you are hungry and tired.
As expected, the spinach was the highlight for me. It was cooked just right, tender enough to enjoy easily but still with that slight crunch that made it feel fresh. That texture really made a difference. It gave the bowl a refreshing quality that matched the clean and subtle flavor of the broth. The soup itself was gentle and comforting, not overly seasoned, not oily, and not too rich. It was exactly the kind of taste that feels calming after physical activity.

The wantons were also pleasant. I liked that they were not too heavy, which was exactly what I had hoped for. Sometimes dumplings or wantons can make a dish feel much more filling than expected, but in this case they stayed light enough to suit the mood of the meal. Together with the thin noodles, spinach, and broth, everything came together into a bowl that felt balanced and easy to finish.
That said, the price is probably the one thing that stands out a little. At SGD 7.30, it is definitely more expensive than what you would usually find at a regular hawker stall, where a similar dish might cost around SGD 5.50. Still, I can understand why. The stall is located close to the MRT station, the setting is air-conditioned, and the whole place feels cleaner and more comfortable than a typical open-air hawker center. In that sense, the price difference feels more justifiable.

Overall, I enjoyed this meal very much. It was light, comforting, and satisfying without being too heavy, which was exactly what I needed after cycling. Sometimes, the best post-ride meals are not the most indulgent ones, but the ones that make you feel restored. This bowl from Haus Ban Mian did exactly that.
Bon appetit!
