Dear Hive Friends,

The organizers of the Filipino community in Vienna have once again brought Filipino food and culture to life with this wonderful food event. I went there last Sunday, eager to taste some delicious Pinoy dishes and, of course, to enjoy a little taste of home. For me, as a native Filipino, it was especially heartwarming to see so many of the foods I miss from home being offered in one place. The event had a lovely mix of comforting Filipino home cooking and the lively character of street food — simple, flavorful, and full of familiar tastes.

Am Kaiserwasser

The venue couldn’t have been more perfect. It is located right beside the Kaiserwasser, a beautiful side arm of the Alte Donau in the Kaisermühlen area, directly at Weissauweg 1, next to SV Donau. The setting makes the whole experience even more enjoyable. You can buy your favorite Filipino dishes inside the event area, take them outside onto the lawn, and enjoy a relaxed picnic with family or friends. And if the weather is warm enough, you can even go for a swim and make a whole day out of it.

Photo with my "Halo-halo" was taken on my
last visit to the Food Festival last May

My main reason for coming to the event was to taste one of my favorite Filipino desserts — Halo-halo. This colorful and refreshing dessert is made with shaved or crushed ice, layered with sweet ingredients such as leche flan, sago, and ube, then generously poured over with evaporated milk. Mine was topped with delicious ube and cheese ice cream, which made it even more tempting.

However, the version I had wasn’t quite as complete as the Halo-halo I remember from Manila. Back home, it often comes with additional ingredients such as freshly grated young buko (coconut), sweet beans, and sometimes pieces of jackfruit. Still, every spoonful brought back a little taste of home — and that, for me, was the best part of the experience.

The vendors offered an irresistible selection of classic dishes, including pork and chicken BBQ skewers, Lechon (roast pork), Lumpia (spring rolls), Adobo (savory, slow-simmered pork), Pancit (stir-fried noodles with vegetables), grilled fish, and, of course, my personal favorite—Halo-halo, the colorful and refreshing Filipino dessert.

It was wonderful to see Filipinos and locals alike browsing the stalls, taking their time to choose their favorite Filipino dishes. There was such a lovely atmosphere as people moved from one food stall to another, attracted by the tempting aromas and the colorful display of familiar Filipino favorites.

As for me, I didn’t stay for very long. I simply ordered my Halo-halo, some pork and chicken BBQ skewers and a Siopao (a soft, steamed bun filled with savory pork). I took my food outside and found a shady bench by the water, where I could sit down and enjoy my little Filipino feast.

I started with the Siopao and happily devoured it- it was soft, warm, and wonderfully familiar. Sitting there in the shade, enjoying the flavors I grew up with, I had one of those simple but special moments that made me feel right at home.❤️

Liebe Hive-Freunde!

Mers

Thank you so much for visiting my blog and for the support.

Holy heaven! I've never had Filipino food, so you can imagine, I should sit there and eat all day to taste everything, which is physically impossible. I'm glad you had some good dishes. It's important to have a taste of home, from time to time.

Are there Filipino restaurants in Vienna? There should be as the city is big and culturally colorful.

Hahaha .. I laugh when you said sitting the whole day to be able to eat everything. That is more likely me, lol 😂
They do this event between Spring and Summer once a month. The people just keep on coming. Even the locals love the food.

There is one restaurant at the Cinema complex of Westfield but I think they have closed because the rent is too high. For me it's ok to have such event , there is a live band and karaoke after midday.
one gets to meet many Filipinos there and create new friendships.

I found this one on-line https://www.lolo-lola.at/#speisekarten - Lolo & Lola - Burggasse 19 1070 Wien - das ist am 'Spittelberg'.

Love the hug!Thank you❤️

Interesting blog - I would not have wanted to miss this, if I knew about it. You mention'freshly grated young buko (coconut)' and I can imagine what this would taste like, because the flesh of young coconut is soft. What we get here in the stores is 'Drink Coconut', with a straw, and that is supposed to be young coconut, but isn't, the flesh is already ripe. Cannot find that one on line except in a Hungarian Spar Store Drink and Eat Coconut - but it isn't really a young coconut as I had seen on some Asian videos.

One thing I like to use as a spice on my food, such as grilled meat, is 'Sweet Chilisauce' I found at Spar, big 700ml bottle. I certainly would have enjoyed that event!

Hello and good morning...you are not late if you would like to go. they are repeating it once more this coming Sunday and starts at 11:00..just take U1 then walk over to that Football area, you will then smell the goodies if you pass by gate.
Thanks for dropping by...I'll search for their poster announcement and will post it here..

Here is the poster announced yesterday, it's going to be this Sunday , Sept 6 ...check this out , you can take the tram Nr. 25 (Aspern) from Floridsdorf , then U1 from Kagran , 2 Stations to VIC (UN) then walk to underpass about 4 minutes to the Venue passing Kaiserwasser water area. Viel Spaß !
