Before I even landed, I asked for recommendations on where to go. Giordano’s came up often, and I figured if I was going to do this, I might as well go with a staple of the city. When I arrived, it was clear I wasn’t alone in my mission—the line was out the door, and that alone told me I was in the right place.
What I didn’t expect was the heads-up that the deep dish would take up to 45 minutes to prepare. That warning was appreciated because I had purposefully skipped meals throughout the day to make room. In fact, I even got a solid workout in earlier that morning, knowing full well my low-carb diet would be completely obliterated by the time the night was over.
And then the moment came.
My medium meat lover’s deep dish arrived, and right away, I could see this was going to be a different kind of pizza experience. It’s more of a pie—thick, gooey, and layered with ingredients in a way that’s completely different from the New York slices I grew up with. Every bite was dense, rich, and flavorful. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it—more than I ever thought I would.
That said, I probably went a bit overboard with the medium size. Between the thickness and the heavy toppings, it was a lot to take in. I didn’t love the crust itself, which felt more like a vehicle than a highlight, so I didn’t feel guilty leaving some behind. But the rest? Definitely worth the carb break.
In the end, I’m still a New York pizza loyalist. The crisp foldable slice, the balance of cheese and sauce, and the nostalgia all win out for me. But I walked away from this Chicago experience with a lot more respect for the deep dish than I ever expected. It's not just pizza—it’s an event.
So, @aftersound, you were right. Deep dish has its place. Just not at the top of my pizza pyramid.
