My favorite food is khichdi. If you don't know what's that then let me explain it to you. It's a very simple dish. The ingredients are: rice, lentils, vegetables, and spices. Many people think it is an ordinary food, but it's not. For me it is very special because it is connected to my childhood.
In childhood, whenever I would feel hungry and there's nothing to eat then my mother would cook khichdi for me. Even if it's middle of the night she would still do it. Because all she cared about was not letting us brothers sleep with an empty stomach. After my father died my mother always seemed very sad, yet she gave her best to take care of her four children. I'm so proud of her that she have done it all alone and did not think of marriage for the second time. My father is the last person my mother ever loved.
My father loved khichdi so much, so did I. She often said I resemble my father, this always made me emotional. I started liking khichdi because of my father, as I always wanted to copy him, to be like him. So I followed everything he did. My mother finds peace whenever she cooks khichdi for us. So obviously, khichdi is very close to my heart. Even today, whenever I eat khichdi, I remember that day and feel emotional.
On rainy days, I prefer eating khichdi because that would increase the taste of it. I would sit around the dining table with my two young daughters and enjoy hot khichdi. Rainy days are the best days for special meal like khichdi.
Now you can understand that why it's special to me. Not because of the taste but because of the beautiful memories attached to it. It keeps me thinking about my mother's affection and of my childhood. Whenever I eat the food I feel connected to my loved ones.
In the end, khichdi is my favorite food because it is delicious and full of precious memories. I can never forget the taste of my mother's cooking and it will always have a special place in my heart, no matter where I go I'll always remember.
