In Guadalajara, Mexico, tortas ahogadas (drowned sandwiches) are very popular. They are made with a type of bread known as birote, which is filled with beans, added meat, and dipped in sauce. They are truly delicious, and believe me, they are unmatched. I have never eaten any in any other region of Mexico like those in Guadalajara. There are also other varieties of tortas (sandwiches), such as tortas locas (crazy sandwiches). These are truly crazy, and the ingredients can vary, but they mainly consist of pork, cheese, tomato, lettuce, sour cream, mustard... If you go to the Mercado Libertad or Mercado San Juan de Dios, as it is popularly known, you will find them just as I show them in these pictures. They were as delicious as they were unhealthy.
