On more than one occasion, I have written and spoken here about the characteristics of December in Venezuela. Over time, a vast number of traditions have taken root, ensuring that—far beyond the religious aspect—Christmas has become a cultural cornerstone, part of the Venezuelan DNA, encompassing music, celebrations, food, gatherings, and parties.
There are various traditional Venezuelan musical forms directly linked to these festivities, the most important being aguinaldos, parrandas, and gaitas.
Until the early 1960s, the aguinaldo was the undisputed king. There were numerous groups dedicated to this genre, and choirs made it a staple of their repertoire, a tradition that continues to this day. During that time, parrandas and gaitas also began to be heard, though they had a smaller presence.
The significant shift occurred in the late 1970s when the group Un Solo Pueblo propelled several parrandas to the top of the radio charts. Almost immediately after, in the early 1980s, several gaita groups such as Rincón Morales and Cardenales del Éxito took center stage.
However, another group also emerged that proposed a modernization of the gaita, triggering a nationwide expansion of the genre—a true phenomenon. That group is Guaco.
Even though I first started "getting serious" about music through the gaita, the parranda has always been my favorite genre.
En más de una ocasión he escrito y hablado acá sobre las características del mes de diciembre en Venezuela, en el que se han establecido una cantidad enorme de tradiciones que han hecho que, mucho más allá del aspecto religioso, la Navidad se haya convertido en una forma cultural, parte del ADN del venezolano, que incluye música, celebraciones, comidas, encuentros y fiestas.
Hay distintas formas musicales tradicionales venezolanas directamente vinculadas con estas fiestas, siendo las más importantes los aguinaldos, las parrandas y las gaitas.
Hasta comienzos de los años 60 el aguinaldo era el rey absoluto. Había cantidad de grupos dedicados a este género y los grupos corales lo hicieron parte de su repertorio, inclusive hasta nuestros días. En ese tiempo empezaron a escucharse también parrandas y gaitas, pero con menor presencia.
El cambio importante vino a finales de los años 70, cuando el grupo Un Solo Pueblo llevó varias parrandas a los primeros lugares del ranking radial. Casi de inmediato, a comienzos de los años 80, varios grupos de gaita como Rincón Morales o Cardenales del Éxito asumieron el rol protagónico.
Pero también surgió un grupo que planteó una modernización de la gaita y eso generó una expansión del género a nivel nacional, que fue un verdadero fenómeno. Ese grupo es Guaco.
Aunque yo empecé a "enseriarme" con la música a través de la gaita, la parranda ha sido siempre mi género preferido.
The parranda I am bringing you today tells the story of the moment a group of musicians arrives at someone's front door to share their music. This was the custom in the old days, and it is exactly what I did with a family parranda group that we kept going for over thirty years.
This piece was written by one of the greatest composers my country has ever produced—the same man who wrote the most widely performed Venezuelan song in the world, "Moliendo Café." Hugo Blanco, the author of the track, also produced it for the group Un Solo Pueblo, and it became an unparalleled hit.
Although it isn't quite the same to sing it accompanied only by a cuatro, without the full array of drums and backing vocals, I still truly enjoy performing it every time.

La parranda que les traigo hoy habla del momento en que llega un grupo de parrandas a la puerta de una casa para traerles su música. Esa era la costumbre antiguamente y así lo hice yo con un grupo de parrandas familiar que tuvimos durante más de treinta años.
Se trata de una composición de uno de los grandes compositores que ha dado mi país, el mismo compositor de la canción venezolana más interpretada en el mundo, como lo es Moliendo Café. Hugo Blanco, el autor del tema fue también el productor del mismo para la agrupación Un Solo Pueblo y se convirtió en un éxito sin igual.
Aunque no es lo mismo cantarla solo con el acompañamiento de un cuatro, sin todos los tambores y coristas, igual disfruto mucho siempre al interpretarla.
