Experiments from the freezer

The other day, during our evening walk around the city, we saw an ice cream parlour and decided to have a sweet refreshment. It was our first ice cream this year. The offer was diverse, although we didn't even recognise many of the flavours on display. Red velvet was my go-to; my husband ordered the coffee flavour, and my son chose the cookie flavour.

Here are our ice creams in our hands, and we had to take a quick picture because it was one of the hottest days, and the ice cream would start melting very quickly:

To be honest, the ice cream was nothing special... Actually, we got a bit disappointed, especially with the coffee flavour and not to mention that these three portions, which weren't very big, cost $12.60. For that money, in Serbia (at least in our hometown), you can have this amount of ice cream every day for a week! @duskobgd can confirm that.

But it was not the only reason I decided to experiment on my own and make our cold desserts at home. I saw a recipe for frozen "cheesecake", like a high-protein dessert made of cottage cheese that gives a similar feeling of eating ice cream. Healthier, homemade, super easy, and more economical - why wouldn't I try?

Well, I didn't have cottage cheese at home and neither did I find it in the two supermarkets yesterday afternoon that I visited when I wanted to prepare the frozen dessert. Then I used what I already had in my fridge. Cherry, banana, and yoghurt.

The most complicated part of this experiment was removing the pits from the cherries. Everything else was more than easy. I added a little honey too, and mixed everything together.

charries and bananas......mixed with yoghurt and honey

I poured this rather liquid mass into a wide glass container and it was ready to go to the freezer.

The quantity was not much because this was an experiment just with one banana, some cherries, two small packages of yoghurt, and one tablespoon of honey.

What was the most complicated part of this activity?

...

Waiting at least two hours for it to freeze down. 😂

I checked it after an hour and it still wasn't ready. But around ten o'clock at night, I finally took it out of the freezer and checked how firm it was.

The spoon gave the verdict - we could have this little frozen snack. It had quite a good taste, although it is not the prettiest looking frozen yoghurt. I also have to mention that it was a bit icy under the tongue. You should eat it slowly (not as quickly as I did 😆).

Btw, I shared it with my husband.

I still didn't give up on the recipe I actually saw, the one with the cottage cheese. Today we stopped at another supermarket, so I got the right ingredient for it, although I purchased a different fruit for it. Peach in syrup, instead of cherries or other berries.

As the peach was already in the sweet syrup, I didn't want to add honey.

cheese and peach......here already mixed

Just like I did yesterday with the yoghurt with cherries, today I poured the peach and cheese mixture into a glass bowl (although a little smaller, so the layer was thicker).

Today, I couldn't wait more than two hours for it, I was curious and also I wanted a sweet snack at the moment I took the new experiment out of the freezer.

It was definitely less icy than the cherry/yoghurt combination but the cottage cheese had the dominant flavour. I expected to feel the fruity flavour more, so next time I will add more fruits (more variety and quantity) to one pack of cottage cheese, plus a bit of honey.

I hope my throat survives all these experiments from the freezer - the summer will be long! 😆

Do you like to prepare these homemade desserts (without a real recipe, just like little experiments)?

🙂 in Apatin, in the Pčela pastry shop, for 12.5e, there would be ice cream for ten of us 😃

I haven't had the chance to eat homemade ice cream in a long time.

You did a great job with these fruit ingredients, a better option than buying ice cream in a bag that you just pour in water, churn and chill at home.

Yes, yes, I thought exactly about that one hahaha. Here there proof you brought last year :))

Thank you, and we just had after the dinner the rest of the peach/cottaghe cheese frozen dessert.... Tomorrow I should think about a new combination haha 😁

I still fondly remember that last year's treat and the price surprise you gave me🙂

Few days ago, in Budva, in some fancy ice cream shop, one scoop was €3.50.
In contrast to Apatin €0.9 for two scoops... I had no desire to try it, nor to take a photo of their offer, because such an experience with prices is not recommended.

I saw, there seems to be a trend of making homemade ice cream these days in Spain and the UK? 😀

I think making your own ice cream is much better and healthier, and you get to experiment with all sorts. It's fun!!!

And that reminds me, I have a tin of peaches at home, could try peace ice cream next

Btw, I shared it with my husband.

😂

I will definitely continue trying out combinations and ingredients. Today my mom told me the ingredients of another one she used to make, also super easy. Not real ice cream, I know, but as long as it's healthy and refreshing/cold during the summer, everything is welcome. :))

Hahaha, I simply had to add that sentence (about sharing with someone) 😜🤣

Ooooh, peach ice cream!!! I love peaches! But ice cream shops are so expensive, so I buy ice cream from supermarkets in different flavours, because I go to as many supermarkets as I can, Mercadona, Día, Carrefour and El Corte Inglés.

But you’ve reminded me of when I didn’t have any money to buy ice cream, when I was little, my grandmother and my mum used to make it at home… it was delicious!!! It was made with love!🤗

Yeah, ice cream shops here in Spain are quite expensive. But those from supermarkets in packs are tasty and more affordable. We like the MINI almendrado from Mercadona, but we still haven't bought any this year.

it was delicious!!! It was made with love!🤗

Those ones made in the family are indeed the best ones because they are made with love! You said very well! Feliz sábado, have a nice evening @avdesing 🤗

Those are delicious!!! And there are loads of lovely ones, there used to be one called Polvito, but they’ve taken it off the menu… it had meringue and dulce de leche!!!

But why yours look more good to me? It is homemade and I love the used of fruits as flavor. I never tried yoghurt ice cream but when it comes to ice cream, I really love the choco, cheese or peanut flavor ♪ \(^ω^\ )⊙﹏⊙

I also like choco flavour!! 🤤 Will have to think about the next recipe, how to add chocolate to the combination! :)

That's the way to go! Frozen fruit, frozen yogurt, and frozen cheese, are great alternatives to ice cream! Plus, you don't feel so guilty indulging in them in huge portions!

Hahaha, yeah. Especially as I didn't add sugar, I ate the rest of the peach/cottage cheese one after dinner. No regrets hahaha

Interesting, let’s see what I’ve got…. lol

Making these experiments is something similar to writing down songs in our own way hahaha, btw I took a photo of one of the songs I had to learn recently, ie the mess how the scores look like 😂 to respond with a photo-comment to you post from the other day. But then maybe a whole post could come about it. Written down in G major but I had to play in in A major, in different time signature as well 🤣

Ugh… at home we have been eating ice cream almost daily since I was in Alicante. But I never tried to make them since I was a child.

Now we have discovered these that are based on fruit juice to get the illusion that they are healthier. 🤣

IMG_3073.png

It was our first ice cream for this season bought in an ice cream parlour hahaha, maybe we didn't feel the summer heat until now (it's a joke, Mister Heatwave visited us already twice)

These look healthier indeed, if just organic fruit juice is what they contain. So you buy them in liquid state and then at home freeze them down?

So you buy them in liquid state and then at home freeze them down?

Yes. We bought them in Costco. They are very tasty. 😋

The cherry-yoghurt idea sounds good and the peach with cottage cheese also sounds a great idea. I will also definitely try this one. I think adding some dry berries will make it more healthy☺️

Yes, berries are also nice to add. 👍 I didn't have it at home at the moment I made these

Now I'm so tempted to put my throat to the test too - try out some experiments and see if it survives 😆

We can just leave these frozen desserts outside of the freezer for some minutes and they would melt already. No danger for the throat then :)

Great! Let's do just that and keep the throat save.
