Good evening, friends, how are you? How was your Christmas? Like every year, I spent Christmas at my mother-in-law's. We always spend it there, not only because my mother-in-law, poor woman, is a widow and her two children live far away, especially my brother-in-law, who is in Germany. We live about an hour and a half's drive away. It's also her birthday, yes, the same as Jesus's. My mother-in-law is a great cook; like a good Southern Italian woman of another generation, she has a rich and delicious cuisine, but not at all diet-oriented.
This year, too, my stepdaughter and I came over, and we exchanged gifts: food, books, sparkling wine, and more! Here, we usually give each other gifts for Christmas, like cheeses, cured meats, and traditional sweets. Then we chatted, had an aperitif with sparkling wine, and then my stepdaughter started helping my mother-in-law in the kitchen. She was making wild boar sauce. Do you like game? We love it, especially my mother-in-law's cooking, because it's not easy to cook wild boar and take away its gamey flavor.

Siempre la pasamos allí, no solo porque mi suegra, pobre mujer, es viuda y sus dos hijos viven lejos, sobre todo mi cuñado, que está en Alemania. Vivimos a una hora y media en coche. Además, es su cumpleaños, sí, igual que el de Jesús. Mi suegra es una cocinera estupenda; como buena italiana del sur de otra generación, tiene una cocina rica y deliciosa, pero nada dietética.
Este año también vinimos mi hijastra y yo e intercambiamos regalos: comida, libros, vino espumoso ¡y mucho más! Aquí solemos regalarnos por Navidad, como quesos, embutidos y dulces tradicionales. Luego charlamos, tomamos un aperitivo con vino espumoso, y entonces mi hijastra empezó a ayudar a mi suegra en la cocina. Estaba preparando salsa de jabalí. ¿Te gusta la caza? Nos encanta, sobre todo la comida de mi suegra, porque no es fácil cocinar el jabalí y quitarle su sabor a caza.
We chatted about this and that, updating each other on relatives, everyone's health, politics (even though, etiquette dictates, it shouldn't be discussed at the table), and some gossip and news. Then we ate our pappardelle with wild boar (very delicious), bread stuffed with pork loin and bacon (also a fairly typical dish) with potatoes, and to finish, a classic tiramisu (which I didn't have time to photograph because we were all too busy eating), followed by coffee and liqueur. As always, it was a pleasant and peaceful family Christmas. It's nice to have a little family together for Christmas, especially because with my husband's job, it's difficult for everyone to get together. In fact, we're having a late Christmas dinner at my parents' house, and the same goes for my paternal grandparents. We came home full of food and gifts, and even today we ate the leftover wild boar sauce! Wow, we Italians really do eat too much at Christmas!
Charlamos de todo, poniéndonos al día sobre la familia, la salud de todos, política (aunque, por etiqueta, no se debe hablar de eso en la mesa) y algunos chismes y noticias. Después comimos pappardelle con jabalí (deliciosos), pan relleno de lomo de cerdo y beicon (también un plato bastante típico) con patatas, y para terminar, un tiramisú clásico (que no tuve tiempo de fotografiar porque estábamos todos demasiado ocupados comiendo), seguido de café y licor. Como siempre, fueron unas Navidades familiares agradables y tranquilas. Es agradable tener a la familia reunida en Navidad, sobre todo porque con el trabajo de mi marido es difícil que todos nos reunamos. De hecho, cenamos tarde en casa de mis padres, y lo mismo les pasa a mis abuelos paternos. Volvimos a casa llenos de comida y regalos, ¡e incluso hoy nos comimos la salsa de jabalí que nos sobró! ¡Vaya, los italianos comemos demasiado en Navidad!
